Thanks for the answer. Since i am not a WD expert. Am i right that you add P373 when a Commonscat template is added to the English WP article? If so, does that also work for other language WPs?
No, P373 is added when to a Wikidata item a sitelink to a commons category is added. For example, the trigger for this edit was this edit.
Hi, I've an additional question concerning this topic:
I noticed that P373 is not added when the corresponding item on wikidata has property P31 with the value Q4167836 (in other words when the item is marked as Wikimedia category. Could you please indicate me the place to find the explanation for this?
On the other hand there is the following maintenance category on en-wikipedia en:Category:Commons category without a link on Wikidata which lists more than 15 thousand categories.
From my point of view there is a slight contradiction if we do not expect categories to contain P373 here on wikidata while we mark these categories nevertheles in the precited maintencecategory on en-wikipedia. as an illustration i would likt eo quote Q55810202

Hi I make another try and formulate my question in another way:
Is there a specific reason why Deltabot is not adding the property P373 when the wikidata item has property P31. Here are some examples to illustrate: Q29887966, Q30601133, ... thanks for your feedback
On items with instance of (P31)=Wikimedia category (Q4167836) you can add the Commons category as sitelink and Commons category (P373) is not necessary. On other items this is not possible because each page can only be added once in the sitelink section. Because of this limitation, we have Commons category (P373) to allow cross-namespace links, e.g. links between Wikipedia articles with Commons categories.
I see but why do we then have en:Category:Commons category without a link on Wikidata in which pages and categories are listed as long as P373 is not put.
unfortunately my technical knowledge does not allow me to find out how to change this category on en.wikipedia so it completely reflects this considerations.
I'd suggest adding the P373 value in those cases anyway - I don't think it does any harm at this point, and it looks like it would reduce manual editor work. Although I'm hoping that P373 can be deprecated in the long term...
@Pasleim Indeed it would be a great help to use the maintenance categories en:Category:Commons category Wikidata tracking categories if your Bot could add the 'non necessary Property:P373 to items with Property:P31. As it works by now I've to add manually both the 'useful' link the category on Commons and the property P373 in order to be able to make a useful use of the pre-mentionned maintenace categories and especially en:Category:Commons category without a link on Wikidata
@Pasleim It seems to be a bit hit-and-miss at the moment. As a sample, see https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?limit=50&title=Special%3AContributions&contribs=user&target=Pi+bot&namespace=&tagfilter=&start=2018-08-01&end=2018-08-01 - around 200 sitelinks added in the same way in a short period of time. Somehow, Q18648354 has gained two identical P373 values, Q15102678 got one (correctly), while Q4732805 doesn't have one yet - and you can see a mix of those three cases throughout the set. It's not critical, but it would be good if you could look into this and make the code more reliable/robust. And thanks for running the bot!
