What is it?[edit]

Creation of this item is a much confusion for me. One should explain how its different from family name (Q101352). Examples of "Q121493679 not Q101352" and of "Q101352 not Q121493679" if applicable. Infovarius (talk) 19:23, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Surname is any name after given names, family names are one of such, but so are patronymics/matronymics, location bound names and household names. In modern day most surnames are family names (some exceptions exist, such as Iceland) but historically people had many different ways of differentating themselves from other people, as you can see some languages like Norwegian (both bokmål och nynorsk) and Danish have separate articles for surnames and family names.StarTrekker (talk) 20:07, 19 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
So you speak for Scandinavian culture? Probably some of these items should be marked as "Scandinavian"? Because I don't understand where "ru:фамилия" should go (it usually translates to English as surname or family name, equally). --Infovarius (talk) 20:46, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Does фамилия include matro/patronymics (I know those are pretty common in Russia) or does it only refer to a family names that gets passed down each generation regardless of the parents personal names?StarTrekker (talk) 21:47, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Based on what Google translate is telling me the Фамилия article on Russian Wikipedia seems to imply that matro/patronymics are not considered Фамилия, so based on that I would assume it belongs best at the family name item.StarTrekker (talk) 21:49, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, doesn't include patronymics, so family name (Q101352). And how to label Q121493679 then... --Infovarius (talk) 20:47, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Infovarius Generally, in Africa, especially Ghana, we have different names such as surname (Your biological or foster father's name), family name (the name of your father's ancestral lineage name), and clan name (the lineage of a group of people in a particular tribe). Some cultures use family names, and others use both. Different tribes have different meanings for the family name and clan name, but for the record, family name and surname are not the same in Africa, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. The use of surname is more of Western culture but that has taken over almost globally because of its mass usage. Dnshitobu (talk) 17:46, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Dnshitobu: Thank you for the info. What you call surname we call patronymics. But clan name is new for me, yes. --Infovarius (talk) 18:07, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
