Parts of speech/Lexical categories[edit]

The parts of speech of context words are really flexible. All context words can be used as a noun, verb, or modifier (adjective/adverb). Should we even be distinguishing between nouns, verbs, and adjectives or should we just make it a generic new class like content word (Q789016) This may help the problem with up to three different entries for words with different parts of speech. From a Toki Pona point of view, I definitely agree that this would make things easier! :) But I guess at this point, I'd feel comfortable with having multiple lexemes for words, one for each lexical category – that should help a lot with automated translations, lead to clearer dictionaries, and fit better into the existing lexeme structure. Thanks for thinking about this! :) I'm still pondering if we should use a "modifier" category instead of "adjective"... --blinry (talk) 18:19, 30 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Remarks copyright and code[edit]

Hi,

This is a fascinating project and I'm looking forward to see what I will become.

For now, I have two remarks :

  • what is the copyright status of this language? (I know that for constructed languages it can be an issue)
  • about phab:T236938 which has been declined for now (which shouldn't stop you to create Lexemes !), I really think you should ask for an ISO code. Reading https://iso639-3.sil.org/request/2007-011 and especially the comments on this Request, I think there is some chance that the code would be accepted 12 years later.

The question about copyright is a good one! But in fact, the official book states: "The Official Toki Pona Dictionary is in the public domain" Given that the language is so simple that it's basically contained in the description of the grammatical particles in the dictionary, and given that I've repeatedly heard Sonja Lang express that she wants everyone to be free to use the language for everything, I think this should be no issue at all. blinry (talk) 10:54, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Blinry: perfect, at least it's clear now. Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 09:57, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding the ISO code, there was a second rejected request in 2017. But Robin is part of a group striving for another request – feel free to elaborate on the status, @Robin van der Vliet:! :) blinry (talk) 10:54, 3 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Blinry: oh, I missed that one. I found this document On criteria for granting new codes in ISO 639-3, the barrier is high (looking at en:Toki Pona#Community maybe they are already met?). Cheers, VIGNERON (talk) 09:57, 5 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
