Wikidata:WikiProject Canada Open Government and COVID-19
This WikiProject aims to identify and document the Open Data COVID-19 resources provided by the Canadian government in response to the global pandemic. Creating items for the major reports, bills and other pieces of legislative changes will allow better understanding of the Government of Canada's ability to effectively implement Open Data and Open Government mandates.
Canada and Coronavirus disease (COVID-19)
[edit]Canada seeks to follow open government principles in its portrayal and access to resources associated with COVID-19. Access to these resources falls under the Open Government Licence - Canada
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) resources from StatCan are regularly updated and relevant to staying informed on various aspects being impacted and studied during the outbreak. For example, these regular updates are demonstrated with the presentation of COVID-19 epidemiological and economic research data.
The epidemiological data includes regularly updated maps, modelling, datasets, and reports, of which the most recent ones are listed here:
- Mathematical modelling and COVID-19 provides estimates of cases of the disease for the short-term using two types of modelling approaches: forecasting, which estimates the number of new cases and deaths that might occur in the coming week; and dynamic models showing how the virus behavior and the potential public health measures might impact how the epidemic unfolds over the coming months.
- The latest modelling presentation update is from 2020-06-29, 'Updating on COVID-19 in Canada: Epidemiology and modelling'
- Interactive maps are frequently used as visualization tools to show the cases and deaths over time by province. - https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection.html#a1 Additionally, the government agency provides interactive data visualization tools, including charts, projections and graphics for COVID-19 cases internationally. - https://health-infobase.canada.ca/covid-19/international/
- A detailed daily reports page with updates occurring once per day at 19.00 EST (UTC -5) provides details on the current situation from both federal and provincial perspectives. The daily reports include: hotspot and new case reports; the number of people tested; demographic information; the epidemic curve; and an exposure setting update tracing the likely acquisitions of the virus domestically, internationally and through unknown/pending means.
- Reporting on cases from First Nation communities is also available, but less frequently updated than the national and provincial data. These updates include only cases reported within reserve communities. https://www.sac-isc.gc.ca/eng/1589895506010/1589895527965
Economic and socio-economic data is collected and compiled into two summaries, the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) statistics, table data on a weekly basis by applications for benefits based on province/territory, gender and age group of applicants. The StatCan COVID-19 data perspective provides a more nuanced look at the impact of the virus on Canada's socio-economic landscape through articles on various subjects, including a Geospatial Explorer Hub.
