On Property_talk:P968#Change datatype and formatting a change to property email address (P968) has been proposed by me two years ago but discussion suddely interrupted.
I propose to:
- change back the data type from URL to string
- change the regex removing the initial "mailto:"
- add formatter URL (P1630) with "mailto:$1"
- change all data from "mailto:email@domain.xxx" to "email@domain.xxx"
The reason is that this property can't be used correctly in it.voy as we want to show the email with a link to mailto:
URI and you can't do [mailto:EMAILADDRESS EMAILADDRESS]
right now. Filceolaire and Pyfisch proposed this change but the first one died.
Trockennasenaffe was in favour and Matěj Suchánek noted that this is a breaking change for data consumers and needs greater discussion and announcement. Let's go on with this discussion, please. --★ → Airon 90 13:02, 27 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- I think there are two possible good ways to show emails: 1) with Lua, 2) change {{#statements}} to remove mailto: in text. In any case, the worst option is to lose the metadata and complicate the scheme due to problems with the output. As they say in OpenStreetMap, don't map for rendering, instead change the rendering itself. —putnik 11:13, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- Can’t you just strip the “mailto:” from the email address in case it’s there? —MisterSynergy (talk) 11:20, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- Would this change make the current "equivalent property" entries invalid? I guess so, and I would consider this unfortunate from a data integration perspective. Toni 001 (talk) 11:04, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
- Support See section 3.4.1 of RFC 5322: Internet Message Format (Q47485091) for the specification of an e-mail address identifier. These identifiers can be used without the "mailto" URI prefix. Dhx1 (talk) 11:23, 31 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
