Planned usecompletion of infobox data for snooker tournaments

Motivation[edit]

I want to use it for snooker seasons like 2022–23 snooker season (Q111445284) as property for the single tournements (has part(s) (P527) 2022 Championship League (Q112327226) etc.) to mirror the infoboxes. It can also be used for the tournament tables of the seasons, e.g. en:2022–23 snooker season (rows in white or yellow) or de:Snooker-Saison 2022/23 (column "Art"). Can of course be extended to other kinds of sports where applicable.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by HvW (talk • contribs) at 22:07, 15 April 2023 (UTC).[reply]

Discussion[edit]

  •  Support useful addition. --Snookerado (talk) 14:51, 18 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • This proposal has potential to improve a lot of situations that are currently not modelled properly. Difficulties at this point:
    1. What exactly does "significance or status" in the proposal description mean?
    2. What exactly is the domain for this property? Sports competitions can have a wide variety of formats/types, and it is difficult to establish a clear hierarchy/ontology. I think it would be great if we could come up with something rather generic that fits any type of sports competition, but I am not sure how complex it would be to develop this. —MisterSynergy (talk) 12:56, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your input. I tried to find a description for the allowed values and came up with "status". You could also say: what can be gained by a tournament win? Ranking points, promotion/relegation, a champions title, or just money. I don't know about all types of sports, but I would say it is what tournaments essentially are about. As the values are limited we can keep the domain under control. Maybe we could add what "tournament type" is not about, e. g. amateur/professional events or round-robin/knock out competitions.
It also doesn't mean that every tournament must fit into one of those categories, as I wrote it can be used where applicable. We don't have to define all types for all sports in advance, we can discuss and adjust the allowed values in the future when the need arises. -- HvW (talk) 23:19, 20 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
