This page is for the proposal of new properties.

Before proposing a property

  1. Search if the property already exists.
  2. Search if the property has already been proposed.
  3. Check if you can give a similar label and definition as an existing Wikipedia infobox parameter, or if it can be matched to an infobox, to or from which data can be transferred automatically.
  4. Select the right datatype for the property.
  5. Read Wikidata:Creating a property proposal for guidelines you should follow when proposing new property.
  6. Start writing the documentation based on the preload form below by editing the two templates at the top of the page to add proposal details.

Creating the property

  1. Once consensus is reached, change status=ready on the template, to attract the attention of a property creator.
  2. Creation can be done 1 week after the creation of the proposal, by a property creator or an administrator.
  3. See property creation policy.

Motivation

[edit]

There is, as far as I can tell, currently no proper inverse relation to represents (P1268) or country for sport (P1532) that is applicable to the entity or geographic area that the team "plays for". Although widely misused in that fashion, represented by (P1875) is clearly intended for a person or organisation that negotiates on behalf of another (i.e. managers, agents, lawyers, lobbyists...). This proposal aims to correct this fairly obvious gap.

Note: While I am aware of the temptation of partially "rebuilding" the linked items through the overuse of qualifier (sports/league/years/class etc.), this proposal is 100% agnostic as to what, if any, qualifiers should be expected or allowed. Circeus (talk) 16:43, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion

[edit]
  •  Comment The label "representing sports team" is a bit confusing. At first I thought it meant the sports team was the one being represented. -wd-Ryan (Talk/Edits) 20:06, 10 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Support --Trade (talk) 12:07, 20 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Weak oppose. I think example 1 probably shouldn't be tagged; the team should link to the city/country, but not vice-versa. Items like New York City or the United States would be overwhelmed as they have a ton of teams that represent them (see en:United States national team). I think has part(s) (P527) is probably adequate for example 3 (though the handball team should probably use parent club (P831) instead of part of (P361)). Example 2 is the type of scenario that makes this property most tempting to add, as it's an important relationship and the type of thing you'd want in, say, an infobox about the university. I would be more amenable to this property if the scope were narrowed a bit....
Perhaps there should be a requirement that the object be not merely a team, but a governing organization that represents the subject in all/most sports. This would include UCLA linking to the UCLA Bruins, and the United States linking to the US Olympic/Paralympic Committee, but it would not include every team in a city/country being added. I like this because it limits the parent item to only having very high-level information (the kind of stuff you'd want in an infobox)... but I'm also concerned that the distinction is a bit arbitrary (e.g. soccer governing bodies typically oversee men's+women's soccer, beach soccer, futsal, paralympic, etc for a given country – would they be included?). Would love to hear others' thoughts! –IagoQnsi (talk) 23:00, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, another idea: The requirement could be that the object must represent ALL aspects of sport for the subject. So United States would link to sports in the United States (Q1511442), New York City would link to sports in New York City (Q903253), etc, but also UCLA could still link to UCLA Bruins. Right now those items are a bit barren, but perhaps they could be filled out with links to teams and such? –IagoQnsi (talk) 23:15, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

A little reminder: Consensus is _not_ a simple majority. A well-reasoned vote is stronger than one that is uninformed. It is up to the property creator to determine if an unresolved issue is a "blocker" or not. Infrastruktur (talk) 00:03, 17 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
A freetext search [1] for Johann Olav Koss (Q318403) yields no profile. A freetext search [2] for Vegard Ulvang (Q370499) yields no profile. I can easily produce more examples. IMO this makes the site useless as an information resource. Infrastruktur (talk) 22:53, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Although the Team Norway website does not contain people who competed in the Olympics during the 1990s or earlier, I don't think that makes it useless. The same is true for many of the National Olympic Committee websites which currently have Wikidata properties. I have found 289 Wikidata items that would use this property, if it is created.

This along with PWBA (another property proposal) will be useful for adding information about professional bowlers. Surprisingly, we have no bowling related properties that I could find. It seems only this and PWBA could be relevant. I will (if I haven't already) make a separate proposal for Professional Womens Bowler Association.

Discussion

[edit]
  • Professional bowling seems to be under-covered. Not a lot of players listed [4] and I can't find any ID properties for it. The number of the players on this site seems to be 74 at the time of writing. The site doesn't seem to have restrictions in general, I checked the players on the first page. Since User:Chew says they intend to add profiles about bowlers, that's good enough for a  Support from me. Infrastruktur (talk) 20:13, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Odd that there is a 403 here, seems like normally pages are 404. I'll see if I can verify why this is an unauthorized page. Chew (talk) 21:43, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If she's 16 and listed on the website for pro men, that might have something to do with it. [5] Infrastruktur (talk) 21:58, 9 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

‎official roster page

[edit]

Motivation

[edit]

Many sports teams will have pages on their official website for each player on their roster. These are usually pretty good sources of information, and as a result they very often appear in the 'External links' section of player biographies on Wikipedia. While we have external-id properties for many of the league links that appear in player articles, we do not currently have a good way to store team links. These may sometimes get copied over to Wikidata with the described at URL (P973) property, but I think it would be valuable to have a separate property for these links, with member of sports team (P54) as a mandatory qualifier. This would make it easier to automatically include these links in Wikipedia articles and generate a nice localized label for them.

Some teams (especially college teams in the US, I've found) will keep these links live forever, while other teams will take down these pages when a player is taken off the roster; in such cases, an archive URL (P1065) qualifier can be added. I could imagine someday we could have a bot adding archive URLs automatically; if we have a member of sports team (P54) property on the player with an accurate end time (P582) qualifier, a bot could potentially use that as a hint to find an archive URL dated near the end of their time with that team.

I did consider making the scope of this proposal broader, to include any official bio from an organization that a person is officially associated with (e.g. executive bios at corporations, speaker bios on conference websites, etc). However, it wouldn't be possible to have a constraint for a mandatory P54 qualifier if we did that. I also don't know that such links would be very valuable; corporate bio pages are often extremely brief, in my experience. So that's why I kept the property so narrow; I welcome discussion though! –IagoQnsi (talk) 18:38, 16 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Motivation

[edit]

The Soccerway (Q24192203) website has a new URL and ID for their association football player (Q937857) pages since September 2025. The following is an example for Mateja Zver (Q6786419):

https://int.soccerway.com/players/-/45569/ (archive 2025-02-22)

I suggest that a property be created for this new ID. The existing property Scorebar / Soccerway person ID (P2369), which is used in over 126,000 Wikidata items, would remain for now. Many of those old URLs with numeric IDs redirect to the 2025 URL with the new ID. -- Zyxw (talk) 17:15, 4 October 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  •  Oppose That's modelling for the interface. We can get this already with a SPARQL query. --Tinker Bell 17:00, 8 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    @Tinker Bell , That's modelling for the interface, what does that mean? Masoud.h1368 (talk) 18:32, 8 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Masoud.h1368: Wikidata tries to create the best libre knowledge database, and while one of its main purposes is providing data to Wikimedia projects, it is not the unique, and we always try to model all of that knowledge as good as we can in order to provide a general knowledge db. That's modelling for the interface: Most people who come to Wikidata from any Wikipedia just want to store a particular row from an infobox in an item, and while sometimes a row matches exactly with a property-value triple (e.g., a name, a born date), sometimes an infobox row expresses complex data, that we already store in another property or properties. This is the case of your proposal: since we already know the date of each season, we can know what is a team's current season by just asking Wikidata «what's the last season that points to a particular team, ordering by date and checking if the current date is within the date range of that». We make these "questions" or queries using SPARQL and (in the case of Wikidata) the Wikidata Query Service. Every time we ask, we'll obtain always the "current season", or none, in the case of a team that doesn't have a season now. That's why ArthurPSmith said that the value of your proposed property will became obsolete, it doesn't matter whether it will be in 1 or 10 years, compared to a value that will never change (like the dates of each season), it's fast. Creating this proposal only gives us the work of changing its values constantly without any benefit, because the data that this proposal would store are already stored. Therefore, is responsibility of Wikipedia making that "question" and process the result in order to show it as wanted in the article. Currently there are plans to let other Wikimedia sites making queries to WDQS, although there's no a deadline to implement it (for other MediaWiki instances, there are extensions that let's you make these queries), but for now, there's no way to make these questions directly. Although there are bots that make these queries on its own and updates Wikipedia article, this could be a temporal solution for your use case. --Tinker Bell 21:15, 8 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Comment As User:Tinker Bell indicates, we don't like "current" properties in Wikidata - they quickly become obsolete. Who will maintain this? ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:40, 8 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    @ArthurPSmith Is one year fast? Masoud.h1368 (talk) 18:15, 8 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Oppose per Tinker Bell. Including this would just be redundant and more to maintain since it is already modeled on the inverse items. -wd-Ryan (Talk/Edits) 15:38, 10 November 2025 (UTC)[reply]
