Motivation[edit]
This is part of the same exercise as population rank and area rank and I suggest the proposals should should fail or succeed together. It will be qualified with a point in time (P585) and a new value will be added each year when new population estimates are published. Keith Edkins (talk) 23:17, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
Discussion[edit]
- Comment "similar items" seems ill-defined. I think you should use some sort of (required) qualifier to specify the context; I'm not sure if we have anything comparable right now as a property. In principle if Wikidata had complete data you could just compute ranks like this, but I can understand it's useful to save them. ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:19, 6 November 2019 (UTC)
- That would make sense. I have added a proposal for a new qualifier property as I can't see anything existing which would fit. It has an additional use: 10 of the ceremonial county of England (Q180673) are co-terminous with a non-metropolitan county (Q769603) and share a wikidata item. Similarly 6 are co-terminous with a district of England (Q349084). With this qualifier the items can be simultaneously ranked in 2 different contexts and the correct value retrieved when required. - Thanks - I think it makes sense then, so Support for this also. ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:16, 8 November 2019 (UTC)

- Comment I wonder whether it would be better, from the viewpoint of potential internationalisation, to just store the number and use the
{{Ordinal}}
template on it to generate (in English) the st-nd-rd-th suffix. Keith Edkins (talk) 17:00, 7 November 2019 (UTC) - Strong oppose See Wikidata:Property_proposal/population_rank. --Tinker Bell ★ ♥ 22:03, 16 November 2019 (UTC)
