Motivation[edit]

WIAG provides a domain-specific knowledge hub for Medieval and Early Modern research. The project started in march 2021 with the publication of metadata about all bishops, archbishops, auxiliary bishops and patriarchs of the Holy Roman Empire as well as data about the dioceses of the Old Empire. More data will be added to the database, including entities fundamental to the research field such as persons, ecclesiastical institutions, objects and places as well as typifying information. WIAG is curated within the infrastructure of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities by the research projects Germania Sacra and Deutsche Inschriften.
