Motivation
[edit]Faults exist throughout the world and, where they exist, they can significantly impact our lives and economy. Creating wikidata items for each fault, representing key data of the fault, and providing citations which exist in growing numbers in wikidata, will enable researchers to find relevant and cited information. Discussion
[edit]Some faults in this collection have subfaults or are part of a larger system, as in [1]. There are some faults with a letter designation that don't fit easily (at least easily for me) in this ID numbering convention. I would certainly welcome help in the ID definition if there's a way to include those with letter.Trilotat (talk) 14:23, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

- datatype should probably be external-id --- Jura 15:24, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
- I tried to change it, but didn't want to mess up the proposal. @Jura1: please feel free; I appreciate the help. Trilotat (talk) 17:32, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

- @Pamputt, ArthurPSmith, Jura1: Is there a further edit that someone could make for the fault section IDs, such as this https://earthquake.usgs.gov/cfusion/qfault/show_report_AB.cfm?fault_id=122§ion_id=a ? note the "a" at the end of the html? This is one of four sections of the Pisgah-Bullion fault zone (Q96793470). I intend to add all four section IDs to that item, but I'm not sure if it would trigger an error. Thank you all. - @Trilotat: can you explain further? If the US Fault D is 122 that should be the value of the external id here, right? What do the 'a' etc. have to do with the id? ArthurPSmith (talk) 13:51, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
- @ArthurPSmith: Thanks for correspondence. Some faults are complex systems. They will have a numeric ID and then each component will have an alphabetical ID appended to the numeric. The numeric cOde doesn’t exist alone, so there is no ID 122 alone, but there is a 122a, 122b, 122c, and 122d. The San Andreas has 1a-1j. I wouldn’t create separate items for all 10 subfaults, but rather add each to San Andreas Fault (Q191218). Trilotat (talk) 15:37, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
- @Trilotat: but that means it's not an identifier for the fault, its an identifier for the components? I think it would be better to make a separate item for each identified segment if we are going to use this really as an identifier. Also it sounds like there's an issue with the formatter URL when there are segments, as you have to split the number and letter? ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:58, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
- @ArthurPSmith: Fair point about multiple identifiers on one item. I can make the additional items. Perhaps one could fix the Formatter URL so that if I enter "1a" in the property box, it separates the "1" from the "a" and puts them each in the right place in the URL. - How to add sub-faults to this property? Please see San Mateo-San Onofre-Carlsbad fault zone, San Onofre-Oceanside section (Q98537147). Note the US Quaternary Fault ID (P8455) is 294b which is a format violation given the alpha character. The link to the actual item is https://earthquake.usgs.gov/cfusion/qfault/show_report_AB.cfm?fault_id=294§ion_id=b where the b does not follow the 294 but rather is at the end after the id=. Can this property be expanded to include this id# and link to the correct webaddress? Trilotat (talk) 17:17, 21 August 2020 (UTC)
