Motivation
[edit]I am a student doing an internship at the University of Edinburgh working on the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft project. As part of this I have been checking all the data that has been uploaded on to Wikidata and compare it to the original survey data. As part of this I have been thinking about how the data has been modelled , whilst doing this I realised there was no way for us to record the verdict of the trials (Guilty, Not Guilt & Not Proven). This information is crucial when understanding what the people accused of witchcraft went through. Trial items with a charge should have a verdict and/or trial items with a verdict should have a charge. The motivation of this property is to fill in that gap in Wikidata's modelling. This could be used in other kind of trials not only the witchcraft trials. Delane13 (talk) 15:25, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Support: sounds useful. Maxime Ravel (talk) 07:35, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- Support It makes sense for items on trials to have structured data about their outcome. Richard Nevell (talk) 18:59, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
- Support I was surprised we have so many trials without the outcome being recordable on Wikidata. Stinglehammer (talk) 16:29, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
- As far as I understand in many trials people are found guilty for some charges but not other charges. Creating the property as a qualifier for charge (P1595) would be better than having it as a top-level statement on the trial. ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 11:58, 6 July 2023 (UTC)
- Take your point but looking at the definitions and meanings a verdict is described as "The decision reached at the end of a trial by a Judge, Sheriff, Justice of the Peace or Jury – guilty, not guilty or not proven." Agree that qualifying the charge with the verdict on that charge would hone in on charge specifics and the verdict specifics (and the relationship between the two) but should that information/relationship not be available I think using separately as top level statement should still be possible.
