Description | common way to describe location along a route. 'Linear reference' is defined by operator/authority and might not reflect physical distances (like distance from river mouth does). |
---|---|
Represents | linear referencing (Q1741425) |
Data type | Quantity |
Template parameter | en:Template:Routemap |
Domain | property |
Example 1 | Ruhrschleuse Duisburg (Q583999) → 2.5 km |
Example 2 | Strasen lock (Q21571320) → 2.7 km |
Example 3 | Koblenz power station (Q1807536) → 1.94 km |

Discussion
[edit]- Comment Is this used only in certain countries (Germany?) or is it quite universal for items on waterways? Do you want "string" datatype or would quantity be better (which would display as "2.5 km" rather than "km 2.5" for example? ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:11, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
- It is quite universal: highways, railways, waterways. I would prefer "string" datatype (since it does not necessarily reflect physical distances). It is a man-made/defined feature to describe a location. --DeltaIndiaRomeoKilo-- (talk) 18:45, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
- Support Ok, I think it makes sense - a similar linear reference number is used to indicate road exits in the US, and may be supplemented by a letter (Exit 25B, etc.) though I'm not sure we'd actually have Wikidata items for those points, at least it's plausible the property could be used for that purpose. - From reading the description it's not clear to me what the property does. Can you write a descriptions that makes it more easy to assess the meaning? ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 17:42, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
- Question How do you model the starting point from which this is calculated? If I understood correctly, this works like road milestones (example: incident at the 256th kilometer of Strada Statale 1) --Sabas88 (talk) 21:22, 14 January 2019 (UTC)
- Comment Would support, this is definitely a basic information for many info-boxes of bridge (Q12280) or embankment dam (Q1244922) and used in many other databases. But this definitely should be quantity datatype because the value will always be a length. --GPSLeo (talk) 14:12, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
- @DeltaIndiaRomeoKilo--: what do you think about updating per GPSLeo's suggestion? This even if it doesn't reflect the actual distance. --- Jura 17:15, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
