Motivation[edit]
We currently have GNIS Antarctica ID (P804) for Antarctic locations, which is the gazetteer run by the US Geological Survey, one of about twenty bodies that names sites in Antarctica. This is a database run by the NZ government. The suggested identifier is the single unique "place ID", which maps to the database. Deror avi (talk) 14:45, 1 February 2019 (UTC)

- Support - this is a really nicely put together system with useful content. It's a pity we can't crossmatch from SCAR Composite Gazetteer place ID (P3230), since everything in this should be in there, though. Andrew Gray (talk) 11:22, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
- A few added thoughts on property scope:
- Some places north of 60S are covered, eg 34392 (Campbell Island / Motu Ihupuku (Q3593036)) - mostly subantarctic islands but also a couple of places in NZ.
- There seems to be a mix of locations which are referenced to the actual NZ gazetteer, eg Fendley Glacier (Q5443302) → 19432, and ones which don't, eg Mount Brooke (Q6919867) → 60716.
- The formatter URL works for more or less anything (including images, research papers, etc) not just places.
- I suspect that what this means is that these IDs are just record IDs in the database, not a "place ID" as such. Compare to GNIS Antarctica ID (P804). SCAR Composite Gazetteer place ID (P3230), or Australian Antarctic Gazetteer ID (P3626), which are all purely gazetteers, and where every record explicitly has a place (or name) ID presented.
- Given this, I wonder if it would be worth rescoping this to explicitly say "it's an identifier for a general concept, not just a place". There's good content here, and I would love to see it included, but I'm not sure it's a "place ID" as such. Andrew Gray (talk) 16:06, 3 February 2019 (UTC)
