SPARQL Tutorial[edit]

Gruß --Jonas Kress (WMDE) (talk) 09:33, 9 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi – klar, gerne!

Story for the birthday[edit]

Hello :)

I'm collecting stories, blog posts and stuff to publish during the Wikidata birthday week. Do you have something you'd like to tell, like a funny thing that happened to you on Wikidata or the Query Service, or maybe explaining how you had the idea of one of your Wikidata facts ?

If you need any help, please ask. And I'm looking forward to meeting you in person at the birthday party!

Thanks, Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 09:09, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Lea Lacroix (WMDE): Hi! I’m terribly sorry for the late reply, I’ve been very busy the past week and couldn’t find the time to reply to you.
Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to think of any good stories yet, but I have something else: I just went over my guide to WDQS one last time, and I think it’s finally ready for publication. Does it qualify as a birthday present? :)
Looking forward to meeting you as well! --TweetsFactsAndQueries (talk) 11:52, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No problem :)
Wow, thanks for this huge amount of work! I will definitely highlight it as a birthday present!
Question, what are your expectations about this document? Would you like it to replace/improve the (few) existing documentation on Wikidata help pages? Would you like it to be reviewed/improved by the community? If so, I can suggest it in the same time. Just tell me how I can help.
Cheers, Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 12:19, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the funny thing is that, as I’ve just discovered, the thing is already linked on Wikidata:SPARQL query service/Wikidata Query Help under “First Steps → SPARQL Tutorial”. I’m not sure how it got there :)
So I guess it could stay there, if it’s not too hard to find. Community review would be great – I haven’t really published it anywhere yet because I didn’t think it was ready, but now I think it’s at least good enough to no longer be embarrassing. So I would probably tweet about it very soon, and perhaps add it to Wikidata:Fourth Birthday/Presents if I may?
One open question is that part of the text is still phrased as a tutorial by me as some particular person: “Here’s my solution”, “I want to show you”, little things like that. Should I try to rephrase those away? It feels like that wouldn’t be a great fit for an actual documentation page.
Cheers, TweetsFactsAndQueries (talk) 12:33, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Lea Lacroix (WMDE): I’ve now published it and added it to the presents. --TweetsFactsAndQueries (talk) 17:41, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect, thanks! Yes, if we want to transform this to an "official" documentation, some of the expressions may be changed. But for now, it's perfect as it is :)
Some other people are interested in documenting better the WDQS (including Jonas and Jens in the dev team), this could be great to organize a moment to work all together on improving the doc. Like a small hackathon focused on doc. Would you be interested? Lea Lacroix (WMDE) (talk) 09:34, 30 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Lea Lacroix (WMDE): sure, that sounds great! TweetsFactsAndQueries (talk) 11:38, 30 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Streets and Italian PM[edit]

Can a query list former head of government of Italy by number of years in office and streets or squares named after them in Milan?

Context: Bettino Craxi proposed for a street in Milan; from a quick check of w:it:Presidenti del Consiglio dei ministri della Repubblica Italiana and w:it:Presidenti del Consiglio dei ministri del Regno d'Italia, among those who died at least 10 years ago and were at least 2 years in office, only w:it:Amintore Fanfani and w:it:Luigi Pelloux lack a street/square. But I'm too lazy to do the calculations manually, especially for other cities and offices (such as mayor or councillor of Milan, member of Parliament living or born in Milan, ...).

Could be a cute way to bring some facts in a heated political discussion. --Nemo 16:18, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Nemo_bis: Well, here’s the query, but prepare to be disappointed – the count of streets is currently 0 on all results:
SELECT ?person ?personLabel (xsd:integer(FLOOR(SUM(DISTINCT ?end-?start)/365.2425)) AS ?totalYears) (COUNT(DISTINCT ?stsq) AS ?count) WHERE {
  ?person wdt:P31 wd:Q5;
          p:P39 [
            ps:P39/^wdt:P1313 wd:Q38;
            pq:P580 ?start;
            pq:P582 ?end
          ].
  BIND(xsd:integer(FLOOR((?end-?start)/365.2425)) AS ?years).
  OPTIONAL {
    ?stsq wdt:P31/wdt:P279* wd:Q83620;
          wdt:P131+ wd:Q18288155; # or Q490 for just the city
          wdt:P138 ?person.
  }
  SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "it", "en". }
}
GROUP BY ?person ?personLabel
ORDER BY DESC(?totalYears) DESC(?count)
Try it!
I suspect most streets or squares (I went for the superclass thoroughfare (Q83620)) simply don’t have Wikidata items, or if they do, lack a named after (P138) statement. (Even if you remove line 11 – located in Milan – there’s just one results with a nonzero count, for Aldo Moro (Q171834).) --TweetsFactsAndQueries (talk) 16:42, 19 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Do we have any SPARQL service where we can query OpenStreetMap/Nominatim data at the same time? Nemo 09:09, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Not that I’m aware of. --TweetsFactsAndQueries (talk) 10:09, 20 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

«Ringvaart» (Q1507849)[edit]

I'm rather new at Wikidata. It is not so easy as I thought. So please help. You reverted an edition. What i wanted to do was to introduce the different levels of administration City (Ghent), Region (Flanders) country (Belgium). I think it is a good idea when somenone reverts an edition, to explain the reason. Thanks a lot.--Flamenc (talk) 10:07, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Ringvaart is not a property, so it shouldn’t have a “subproperty of” statement :) I think what you want is this statement: . I’m sorry that I reverted your statement without a comment – I thought it must have been a mistake by an automatic tool or something, I was just a bit confused by it. --TweetsFactsAndQueries (talk) 16:07, 12 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
