September 2022[edit]

Thank you for contributing to Wikidata. I see that you recently created an item Q113837288 that does not clearly indicate its notability. The Wikidata project only accepts items that meet its notability criteria, and your item is therefore likely to be deleted soon. In brief, items must have an associated Wikipedia article, must be needed for statements on another notable item, or must have both identifiers and serious sources. For the last case, a good indication of notability would be multiple articles about the subject in independent publications like newspapers or magazines. You can add such sources as references to specific claims using reference URL (P854), or as top-level claims using described at URL (P973).

Also, this may not apply in this specific case, but you should know that we discourage editors from contributing on topics with which they have a strong personal connection, as this may present a conflict of interest. If you are being paid to edit here, then you are obliged to disclose this. For a longer version, you might find it useful to read the essay "How to create an item on Wikidata so that it won't get deleted".  Bovlb (talk) 15:33, 8 September 2022 (UTC) --Bovlb (talk) 15:33, 8 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Bovlb do you mind restoring these items, so I can work with @Mmargherita97 who is newbie to do this better. --Zblace (talk) 09:48, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Zblace: Thanks for getting in touch and also thanks for offering to help this user.
When you want to appeal a deletion, you should usually first contact the admin who did the deletion, which in this case wasn't me. (I don't do notability deletions.) If you click on the redlinks above, you should be able to see the deletion log entries, which indicate that the deleting admins were Estopedist1 and Ymblanter.
I did see some potential in these items, which is why I left the warnings above, but this doesn't look like a case where I should act immediately to override their decision.
If you do contact the deleting admins, I recommend that you include some indication of how you plan to establish the notability of these items. For example: Do they have any identifiers (official websites, facebook pages, twitter accounts)? Are there any news stories about them you can use as references? You might find it helpful to read WD:GRU and User:Bovlb/How to create an item on Wikidata so that it won't get deleted. Good luck! Bovlb (talk) 15:50, 22 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Bovlb I tried doing it, but I need to see what was done and deleted. Sure identifiers exists at least for some of these and some of them link to prominent organizations and individuals with Wikidata, Commons media and even Wikipedia pages. This is not practice of welcoming new users who are contributing in the underrepresented topics. --Zblace (talk) 14:05, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Neither of the deleted items contained a single identifier, reference, sitelink, or any kind of external link.
I agree that Wikidata is not always welcoming to new users, especially to those contributing to underrepresented topics. This is why I do what I do: I find new items that don’t demonstrate notability but which have potential, and I contact the authors to give advice. I even crafted a special warning message and wrote an essay so that others can do the same. If you have suggestions on how to improve those, I’m listening.
I work with a lot of new Wikidata users, and unfortunately I see the same three mistakes being made time and time again.
  • The first is that they come to Wikidata to create new items. Just like on Wikipedia, it’s better to first find existing items to improve (or existing Wikipedia articles to work from); otherwise it’s not surprising if your first item is not up to scratch.
  • The second is that they don’t pay any attention to our notability policy. I have not checked every interface language, but in English the first line of the “Create a new item” screen says “Please make sure that the item you want to create complies with our notability policy”. That policy is messier than I would prefer, and people who try to read it probably lose interest somewhere in the nine sub-points of N1. Maybe that line could be improved with a short summary.
  • The third is that they do not engage with the community. It’s unfortunate that these items were deleted instead of being improved, but we did give the author an opportunity to improve them. My warning came within hours of article creation. The items were deleted three and five days later. There’s no indication that the author ever returned to Wikidata after article creation. I don’t know how to improve on that from our end; they have to meet us halfway.
I wish I knew how so many people were getting the idea that they should join Wikidata, create a new item with no indication of notability, and then disappear. I wish I could fix that problem at the source. Bovlb (talk) 15:57, 23 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
