Question on changing "instance of" of towns in Wisconsin[edit]

Hi,
as you seem to be expert for places in Wisconsin, I have a question for you :) do you think it would be correct to change all towns that have P31="town of the United States" in the category "Towns in Wisconsin" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Towns_in_Wisconsin) to P31="town of Wisconsin" (with the help of autolist2)? To me it looks like this change would make sense (as the definition of town seems to differ from state to state), but I want to make sure as I'm not 100% familiar with the administrative division of the USA. Currently 494 towns are tagged as civil town of Wisconsin (Q15219655) and 734 towns are tagged as town in the United States (Q15127012) (and a few other towns have different/no tagging at all looks like). --Bthfan (talk) 08:05, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think that would make sense. There are a few caveats:
  1. I haven't checked, but due to them both being called "town", it's likely that there are some things in wikipedia:Category:Towns_in_Wisconsin that are actually town (Q3957) instead of civil town of Wisconsin (Q15219655)
  2. The same problem exists for town in the United States (Q15127012): without having it linked to a wikipedia page, it is not totally clear whether it refers to town (Q3957) (populated areas with a population between 2000 and 20000) or civil township (Q1394476) ("Civil township", wikipedia:Civil_township which looks like it would cover all those similar administrative divisions called variously "town", "township", "civil town", or "civil township").
  3. If they're the same thing, civil township (Q1394476) should probably be merged with town in the United States (Q15127012). If not, the description should be clarified to state that town in the United States (Q15127012) refers to the populated places rather than the administrative division.
Hope that helps. Hawke666 (talk)
The category page says "Wisconsin has 1,266 towns", so judging from the numbers (494+734=1228) each town in there should be a "real" town. BTW: A few days ago someone added P279="political territorial entity" to civil township (Q1394476). I guess from the description of a civil township that's right. Thanks for the reply! --Bthfan (talk) 15:57, 22 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:List_of_towns_in_Wisconsin says 1260 towns, so I'm guessing the category page has a few wrong (unless that can be accounted for by stuff like "Urban town" being in that category when it's not actually a 'town in Wisconsin'). Hawke666 (talk)

Hawke666 and Bthfan - I'd like to start sorting through the Wisconsin towns in Wikidata to get them all consistent (at least, having all of the administrative divisions/things that are the local municipal government body have the same type) - are either of you still interested in this? Hi Erik s paulson, tbh, I have not done anything in Wikidata for ages :) so feel free to fix it, not even sure what I did there seven years ago ;-) Bthfan (talk) 08:06, 20 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like @Mxn might have gone ahead and made a bunch of these changes, converting things that were 'town of the United States' to 'civil town of Wisconsin'. I'm not sure if there was another discussion somewhere else or if they did this on their own, but I don't think either you or @Hawke666 would have objected. (I'm not sure if they got all of the towns or just some of them, either) Erik s paulson (talk) 21:34, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Erik s paulson: I think this was actually Peter James, making edits like this using QuickStatements. All I did was to clean up the labels, descriptions, and aliases in English and Spanish. Anyhow, I agree with the change to a more specific civil town of Wisconsin (Q15219655), since towns in Wisconsin are equivalent to townships in several other states but not equivalent to towns in those states.
