Distinction between dance répétiteur and vocal répétiteur[edit]

Dance répétiteurs and opera répétiteurs require different sets of skills. For example, the dance répétiteur doesn't have to be pianist (but may), whereas this is a prerequisite for the opera répétiteur. As such they could be considered conceptually different. Further, in North America, the opera repetiteur is often named vocal coach and this occupation can be performed outside of an opera company (as an equivalent to a vocal instructor). And there exists a disctint item for vocal coach (Q2350126).

Question Should the dance répétiteur and the opera répétiteur be considered conceptually distinct (regardless of Wikipedia articles amalgamating the two)? Does the German concept of Korrepetitor designate both or just one of these two concepts? Fjjulien (talk) 21:39, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Je pense que ce sont deux concepts différents et qu'ils devraient être séparés. RaffaelaSini 30 April 2021
This question was discussed during a meeting of the LODEPA Wikipedia/Wikidata working group on May 6, 2021 (see the minutes). Here is a summary of their discussion.
  • Members of the working group agreed that role of overseeing the technical execution during the rehearsal process, or more generally supervising the rehearsal process, is conceptually equivalent, no matter the discipline - opera or dance.
  • The role of accompanying the rehearsal over the piano, with no responsability over the quality of the technical execution (and which is denoted in accompanist (Q29448653), was seen to be quite different. In dance, in particular, the person accompanying the rehearsal over the piano is known as an accompanist and can usually not accomplish the tasks of répétiteur or rehearsal director at the same time (see, the artsalive.ca website for definitions of these different roles).
  • In opera, the role of accompanying performers and the role of overseeing the technical execution during the rehearsal process can commonly be accomplished by the same person.
  • In German, the term Korrepetitor designates the accompanying role, but not that of supervision of the rehearsal process.
At the end of this discussion, members of the working group agreed that distinct items for the opera répétiteur and the dance répétiteur are not needed. They however suggested warning Wikidata users that aliases for répétiteur may have very distinct meanings – depending on the discipline and within each discpline – and should therefore not be considered synomynous to one another. Further discussion are needed to define whether the GND authority notice should remain associated with this item or be moved to accompanist (Q29448653).
✓ Done Definitions updated to reflect discussions.
✓ Done different from (P1889) accompanist (Q29448653) added.
