Explanation[edit]
Copy from: Wikidata talk:WikiProject Books
Some short explanation:
- work: group that represents everything about an intellectual creation, by itself it has no material part, it is abstraction
- edition: group that represents a more particular version of a work which, in our interpretation, it might represent or not the material part (taking the role of "manifestation" too if such item doesn't exist)
- manifestation: group that represents an even more particular version of the work, it does represent the material part, which embodiment it was given to the information item for it to exist
- exemplar: one particular physical object

Inverse property[edit]
As far as I know this property is not used for books, but it is more general. Shouldn't it have an inverse property in order to link the concept to the physical manifestation?--Malore (talk) 11:34, 24 April 2018 (UTC)
Usage and meanings ?[edit]
See also Wikidata talk:WikiProject Ontology#Abstract object or physical object ? for some examination and discussion of some of the different ways this property is currently being used.
Here is a query for how it is currently being used, on classes: https://w.wiki/4r6e and on non-classes: https://w.wiki/4rCU
TL;DR - To the extent that the property is being used at all (since with only about 2000 uses it's not being used a lot), a lot of the property uses seem to be to express a vague "loosely associated with" relation between things.
This is not terribly helpful; where available, it is probably better to use a different property, if that can express a relationship more precisely -- eg here are some substitutions that might make sense:
- has use (P366) -- anti-tank cannon (Q1370129)has use (P366)anti-tank warfare (Q316936) (compare https://w.wiki/4rDM)
- field of this occupation (P425) -- ?? believer (Q17573152)field of this occupation (P425)belief (Q34394) (compare https://w.wiki/4rDb)
- shape (P1419) -- Slinky (Q1118802)shape (P1419)helix (Q201717) (compare https://w.wiki/4rDR)
- has characteristic (P1552) -- commodity (Q317088)has characteristic (P1552)fungibility (Q1474273) (compare https://w.wiki/4rDG)
- subclass of (P279)
- ... more?
The property came up in the discussion at WP Ontology, in relation to whether this would be a good property to use to try to establish a more rigorous fire-wall between things in the sub-class tree of physical object (Q223557) and things in the subclass tree of abstract entity (Q7184903), eg (physical <--> abstract):
- liquid (Q11435)manifestation of (P1557)Q29115643
- individual copy of a map (Q63872468)manifestation of (P1557)map (Q4006)
- (physical manifestation of symbol)manifestation of (P1557)(abstract conception of symbol)
But the property is currently being used to express so many different kinds of "loose association" that it's not sure that this meaning would be clear; and therefore also whether use with this meaning could be sharply retrieved in queries, without other (less wanted) sorts of usage also being brought back.
There are some other consistent patterns of usage showing up in the queries above, eg
- (class of computer language) <--> (programming approach)
- (performance of play) <--> (underlying play)
- ... more?
But a lot more of the uses seem a lot more random (or impressionistic, at least).
It would be good, I think, to bring a bit more sharpness and focus to what kinds of things this property is intended to express, and its core usages. Jheald (talk) 11:18, 18 February 2022 (UTC)

- This query https://w.wiki/4rEt can be adapted to list the items/classes in each class, and their manifestation of (P1557) values
- Or, better, here's a query organising the whole list of P1557 statements in this way: items https://w.wiki/4rFC ; classes https://w.wiki/4rF8 -- Jheald (talk) 12:55, 18 February 2022 (UTC)
- This property is also used to link folk tale types (e.g. Cinderella (Q11841) to their written-down versions (e.g. Cinderella (Q2944224), Aschenputtel (Q27075957), etc.)
