Work to do in Rowing clubs

[edit]

Hi everybody. I was having a look in the rowing clubs existing in wikidata and I think that we can improve the data, and try to use the same criteria for all of them. Also we can add other properties which are interesting for rowing clubs, for example, the property located in or next to body of water (P206), because for a rowing club is essential to be located very near to a body of water.

So we can start defining the item for tagging a rowing club. I propose the following:

  1. Tag as rowing club:
  2. Formation:
  3. Place information:
    1. coordinate location (P625)
    2. headquarters location (P159) with the next qualifiers:
    3. located in or next to body of water (P206) (The lake, river, sea... where the team rows)
  4. Images (tbd). Which ones should we use?
  5. Legal information
  6. Contact information
  7. Identifiers

I have some doubts for example in the place information, I don't know how exactly we must organise the information. I think that we should include always the coordinates in a separate property, but then we can group more location properties within the headquarters location (street, city, country). And what do you think of the information about the body of water near the club?

It is just a proposal, don't hesitate to contact me to discuss this topics and try to fix it as soon as possible to start improving clubs data. I love this project! Today, I've just discovered the Wikidata Query tool and I've really understand the final goal of all the data in Wikidata!

Hey Carlos, very good start already! Wikidata:WikiProject Rowing/organizations is still very much open for development, and you can put this draft there :-) Some comments:
  • Whether it is better to have instance of (P31) rowing club (Q7372078) or instance of (P31) sports club (Q847017) + sport (P641) rowing (Q159354) is not that clear to me. Right now, the former is used for pure rowing clubs, while the latter is used for sports clubs that exercise in different types of sport. It is possible to change this later rather efficiently if unification is required, and we can also build queries that respect both ways, or add both right now.
  • coordinate location (P625) was recently placed as a qualifier to location (P276) or headquarters location (P159) claims instead of an independent statement.
  • For Logos, use logo image (P154) only. image (P18) is difficult for rowing clubs; maybe some representative image of their boat house/facilities would work, although the boat house isn’t exactly the rowing club. For media, Commons category (P373) can be quite useful as well.
  • Wikidata:List of properties/Organization has some more interesting properties, some of them are relevant only for a few clubs (e.g. separated from (P807)).
  • Usage statistics of properties in rowing club items:
    SELECT ?property ?propertyLabel (COUNT(?property) AS ?cnt) WHERE {
      { ?item wdt:P31 wd:Q7372078 } UNION { ?item wdt:P31 wd:Q847017; wdt:P641/wdt:P279* wd:Q159354 } .
      ?item ?claim [] .
      ?claim ^wikibase:claim ?property .
      SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language '[AUTO_LANGUAGE],en' }
} GROUP BY ?property ?propertyLabel ORDER BY DESC(?cnt)

    Try it!
There is a lot of space for improvement, nobody has systematically worked in this field. I only made sure until now that most of the sitelinks which are categorized as rowing clubs in Wikipedias have a proper instance of (P31) claim to make them accessible at all.
  • As for the “rowing blade” property: not sure. We should probably find out which similar properties already exist. If we need a new one, Wikidata:Property proposal would be the way to go (i.e. we can’t create it, it needs to be discussed first).

Answer and opinion.

Hi, @MisterSynergy, I have some comments, answers:

  • I like your idea of differentiate pure rowing clubs from clubs with many sports. I've used this notation in the "How to tag" scheme.
  • I've also included coordinate location (P625) within the headquarters location (P159). I think I prefer headquarter location instead of simple location.
  • About logos. Yes, if we have a logo image, we can tag it as logo image (P154).
I've one question:
  • Should we translate the name of the club to various languages? I mean, Thames Rowing Club to Club de Remo Támesis (spanish), or should we put the same name in every language?
Well, I will be working in complete data for rowing clubs, mostly spanish clubs because I may know them better, but I'll can complete other clubs too.
--Kamelox (talk) 20:07, 15 December 2017 (UTC) (I've recently change my username, but deep down I'm the same person )[reply]
Yeah, I already realized the user name change :-) On the matter of language of labels: I have no preference in this question. Label in original language will likely be more suitable in most cases, since we otherwise would have to “invent” some more or less precise translations for the less-known clubs. However, if both versions (original and translated) are in use, you can also use the alias field for one of them. The item can then be found with the search functionality in both variants. As long as the native label is available in native label (P1705), the item label/aliases do not really matter IMO and we can deal with it on a per-item base. —MisterSynergy (talk) 20:19, 15 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
On the "rowing blade image" property: this page lists current properties with commonsMedia datatype (which is what we likely need as well). None of them really fits, right? —MisterSynergy (talk) 20:23, 15 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

About the WikidataQuery

[edit]

Hi@MisterSinergy, I've a question about the Query. I've recently put coordinates and country information to some clubs (Club de Rem Tortosa (Q26202468), Club Náutico Sevilla (Q16549873)), but in the Query that is indicated in the organizations page I can't see the change in the results. And I'm worry that is because that location data is indicated as a qualifier of headquarters location (P159), and not as a independent statement. Could it be?  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kamelox (talk • contribs) at 23:37, 15 December 2017‎ (UTC).[reply]

Yes that is correct, so I have updated the query. It is a little complex now and we should at some point work to streamline it (and the items, of course), but it might be too early to do so. —MisterSynergy (talk) 06:11, 16 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Spanish descriptions for rower items

[edit]

Now that we have Spanish speakers here, I’d like to expand the coverage of Spanish descriptions in items about rowing persons. As of now, only 75 items about rowing persons have a Spanish description, which is only ~1% of all rowing person items in Wikidata. However, I need translations for the following strings:

English Spanish (male form) Spanish (female form)
German rower remero alemán remera alemana
British rower remero británico remera británica
American rower (USA) remero estadounidense remera estadounidense
Dutch rower remero neerlandés remera neerlandesa
Australian rower remero australiano remera australiana
Italian rower remero italiano remera italiana
French rower remero francés remera francesa
New Zealand rower remero neozelandés remera neozelandesa
Polish rower remero polaco remera polaca
Canadian rower remero canadiense remera canadiense
Russian rower remero ruso remera rusa
Soviet rower remero soviético remera soviética
Danish rower remero danés remera danesa
Romanian rower remero rumano remera rumana
Ukrainian rower remero ucraniano remera ucraniana
Norwegian rower remero noruego remera noruega
Spanish rower remero español remera española
Swiss rower remero suizo remera suiza
Chinese rower remero chino remera china
Swedish rower remero sueco remera sueca

So could you please help me? Thanks, MisterSynergy (talk) 06:57, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Kamelox, Vanbasten 23: ^ —MisterSynergy (talk) 10:55, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Vanbasten 23: Thanks a lot. Just to make sure: the first letter should probably be lowercase, right? This is not the case for English, where country-adjectives are always uppercase, but applies to most other languages (e.g. German). See Help:Description for details. “American rower” is indeed for the United States; in German, we write “US-amerikanischer Ruderer” and so on to disambiguate, but in English “American” typically refers to the United States already. —MisterSynergy (talk) 11:37, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, lowercase. I know that is tipical the use of "American", but the rest of the American people don´t think like this. ;) For us it´s "Remero estadounidense" Take care. --Vanbasten 23 (talk) 11:44, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Batch finished
  • Spanish descriptions for rowing persons are now up to 5123 or 72.7% coverage of all rowing persons in Wikidata (from 75 or 1.06% coverage; total number of rowing person items is 7045 right now). If either of you are interested, we could continue with descriptions from these countries (just extend the table above), which would be up to ~1350 extra Spanish descriptions. Around 600 items would have to be done manually due to more complex situations.
  • We can do the same for any other language, of course, so in case you have further language skills… . Wikidata:WikiProject Rowing/statistics#Top 20: Number of descriptions of rowing person items by language gives an overview for the most used languages (might be slightly outdated).

MisterSynergy (talk) 14:23, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Vanbasten 23: there is a complaint about “Swiss rower -- remero sueco -- remera sueca”, see Special:Diff/617758559. With Google Translate, it does indeed appear to be correct that “sueco/sueca” translates to “Swedish”, not “Swiss”. All others are correct, but I guess I have to repair this one, right? If so, what’s the Spanish word for “Swiss”? (According to google: “swiss” as well, but not sure whether they are right.) —MisterSynergy (talk) 15:52, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ahhh, sorry, I did it fast and I did not notice. As the Norwegians and the Danes were just before, I did not read well that it was the Swiss and not the Swedes. Sorry. --Vanbasten 23 (talk) 16:01, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, all 108 cases are already repaired. Plus I know the descriptions for Swedish rowers now as well (about to be added) ;-) —MisterSynergy (talk) 16:04, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
How you change all of them? Any utility? --Vanbasten 23 (talk) 17:23, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, use of tools. I find items with the Query Service (items with occupation (P106): rower (Q13382576) and no other P106, without Spanish description, so this result), and started with descriptioner, which is very intuitive. However, it edits rather slowly and works only for subsets of the previous query (with a single country and single gender), so I switched to QuickStatements2 (input documentation), where I had to prepare the txt-based input manually. That is not much of a problem with a Query Service output as linked in the beginning (download as TSV file), which is then treated with regex-search&replace (using Notepad++ (Q2033)).
So, if you happen to be interested to continue with missing descriptions (Spanish or other languages, maybe ca, gl, eu, fr, it, …?), we could easily proceed here. Right now there is only a significant number of descriptions for en & de (both at 100%), nl, ar, and now also es. —MisterSynergy (talk) 18:26, 8 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

en-label of lightweight events

[edit]

Section moved from Talk:Q47511748MisterSynergy (talk) 14:17, 7 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Any reason this is named "Lightweight men's eight" while other events are called "Men's lightweight eight"? Schwede66 (talk) 19:55, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, fixed :-) —MisterSynergy (talk) 19:58, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Schwede66: I just found that this is a problem for many items (query). “Men's lightweight eight” is more common than “Lightweight men's eight”, right? —MisterSynergy (talk) 20:02, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I would suggest that "Men's lightweight eight" is more common. --Schwede66 (talk) 20:04, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Probably a flaw when I translated de->en. I will have a look tomorrow, to fix it systematically for all affected items. Same for all of these competition class items. —MisterSynergy (talk) 20:07, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Wait, FISA calls it “Lightweight men's eight” and so on (e.g. here, same for other WRCHs). I don’t have a preference as a non-native speaker, but I think we should harmonize the labels somehow. Shall we ask other enwiki editors? —MisterSynergy (talk) 20:11, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea; I suggest WikiProject Rowing. --Schwede66 (talk) 20:52, 22 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Schwede66: see en:Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Rowing#“Men's_lightweight_eight”_or_“Lightweight_men's_eight”. I think we should use “lightweight men's eight” and similar. Would you agree? We could also add aliases with the other variant to all affected items, in order to make sure they are found by users who are more familiar with that style. —MisterSynergy (talk) 20:38, 5 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, makes sense. It's always LM8 when abbreviated; one can't argue with that. Schwede66 (talk) 22:14, 5 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Updated all affected items, and added aliases for the alternative variant (in total we have 622 lightweight event items). I also suggest to move this discussion to Wikidata talk:WikiProject Rowing and leave link to it here, okay? —MisterSynergy (talk) 05:31, 6 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I support that. Schwede66 (talk) 14:14, 7 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Dup?

[edit]

Based on the dates of birth/death, Erik Ole Bye (Q56245524) and Erik Ole Bye (Q4583263) could be identical. --- Jura 13:12, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I have already seen this case and it seems somewhat likely, but I have not found any evidence in sources that these items are about the same person. I should continue doing research here… —MisterSynergy (talk) 13:17, 27 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

World Rowing ID

[edit]

World Rowing has launched a new website with new identifiers. Thus, we need a new World Rowing ID property, in order to be able to keep the old and add the new identifiers. Please support my proposal at Wikidata:Property proposal/World Rowing ID, and I am going to import new identifiers once the property is available; I do already have a mapping table prepared. —MisterSynergy (talk) 13:57, 21 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
