On every Wiktionary namespaces except:

  • the main namespace (where links are already provided by Cognate),
  • the Citations namespace (we're currently investigating to see what is the best solution for this namespace)
  • the user namespace
  • and the talk pages

You should not use the sitelinks on Wikidata to link the main namespace pages: they are already linked by Cognate.

What are the advantages?

With centralized interwiki links, you will not have to maintain manual links in wikitext anymore and no bots maintaining the links between language versions need to make edits anymore.

What is going to change for Wiktionary editors?

First of all, if the manual links are not removed, nothing will break on Wiktionary. The manual links still work and replace the centralized links.

After migrating the links to Wikidata and removing the manual links, the interlanguage links are displayed automatically in the sidebar on all the Wiktionaries. From this sidebar, you can edit the links, change, add or remove them.

Process

What are the next steps?

Before June 20th, you can test the feature on beta, using for example this item and these Wiktionaries: en, de. Feel free to make tests and let us know if you find any bug. ✓ Done

On June 20th, the Wiktionary links section will be created on Wikidata, and the centralized sitelinks will be enabled. ✓ Done

The first step will be to migrate the links to Wikidata, and remove the manual links from wikitext.

Just like on Wikipedia five years ago, this can be done automatically using bots. See the useful tools section below.

Feel free to ask the Wikidata editors for help on the talk page: several people have been involved in enabling centralized sitelinks for Wikipedia in the past, and can help you with that.

How to create and add links?

When you create a new page on a Wiktionary, you need to connect it to the other language versions via Wikidata so it’s linked to the other similar pages on other Wiktionaries.

To add a new link, you will click on “add links” in the sidebar, select a language, then select the name of the page on another Wiktionary you want to link.

If the page is already connected to Wikidata, but you want to add another link, you will click on “edit links” in the sidebar. Then, you will be redirected to Wikidata, and you will have to add a link in the “Wiktionary” section, simply by adding the language code and the name of the page.

In case you want to add a link manually, it will still be possible to enter a link in the wikitext, this link will be displayed as well in the sidebar.

Useful tools

Here’s a list of scripts, bots, etc. that can help you with the migration process. Feel free to improve it.
