Background[edit]

Over the summer and into the early fall the LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group will be offering a series of Wikidata Working Hours to give folks an opportunity to try out various Wikidata-related skills and tools by adding data about diverse children’s books from the Cooperative Children’s Book Center at the University of Wisconsin, Madison to Wikidata. Wikidata Working Hours provide hands-on Wikidata experience in a supportive space. We hope you will join us if you are interested in learning more about Wikidata, love children’s books, or have been looking for a fun Wikidata project to contribute to.

The fifth Wikidata Working Hour in the series will cover creating and editing items for books from our spreadsheet of children's book metadata.

Ways to contribute[edit]

We'll be working on creating works and edition items in Wikidata from a spreadsheet of books from the CCBC data. Books at the top of the spreadsheet have already had items created for contributors and publishers. Further down in the spreadsheet, you will encounter books that may not yet have had Wikidata items created for their contributors and publishers.

Steps:

  1. Open this spreadsheet of books which has been pulled from the master spreadsheet.
  2. Claim a book by filling in your initials in the adjacent column.
  3. Search the book's name in Wikidata to double-check that it hasn't already been created.
  4. If you find that the book has a work or edition item created already, add the Wikidata QID to the Wikidata Work QID column and/or the Wikidata Edition QID column.
  5. If the book does not yet have have a work/edition, create an item for the work and another item for the edition. If you want to verify any of the data or look at the book, a search for the book will often come up with results in Amazon and Google Books that allow you to see the front matter.
  6. The data model below has been created as a basic guide and has been drawn from Wikidata WikiProject Books. Feel free to supplement with any relevant fields.
  7. Once your item has been created, add its QID to the Wikidata Work QID column and the Wikidata Edition QID column.

Basic Statements for Works[edit]

These properties are for the item that represents a book at the (FRBR work level).

Works should be instances of written work (Q47461344).

Labels for works should be the title of the book. The letters that are capitalized in the title of the book are capitalized in the Wikidata label. Examples: Her Rebel Highness and Snow Angel, Sand Angel

Descriptions for works usually include the form of the work and author. Examples: young adult novel by Diana Ma and picture book by Ashley Lukashevsky.

Basic Statements for Editions[edit]

These properties are for the item that represents the edition of a book (FRBR expression/manifestation level).

Each edition of a book should have a separate Wikidata item. If the content (foreword, afterword, illustration), pagination (page number), publisher, or publication place changes, a new item should be created for that edition. If a book is an identical reprint of a previous edition (no change in the mentioned properties), it does not need a new item.

Labels for editions should be the title of the book. The letters that are capitalized in the title of the book are capitalized in the Wikidata label. Examples: Her Rebel Highness; Snow Angel, Sand Angel

Descriptions for editions usually include the form of the edition and author and something to differentiate it from the work like the publication date, edition, or illustrator. Examples: 2022 young adult novel by Diana Ma; picture book by Ashley Lukashevsky and Lois-Ann Yamanaka

Editions should be instances of version, edition or translation (Q3331189).

User Scripts and Gadgets[edit]

Since there are a few statements that may be the same for both works and editions, you may find this user script and gadget useful for duplicating or copying statements from the work to the edition item.

To use user scripts: User scripts are short computer scripts written by Wikidata users that give additional functionality to the Wikidata user interface. Users can list the scripts they would like to add on a special page. Access your own special page via Special:Mypage/common.js, which will redirect you to your own common.js page to add scripts. Step by step slides with screenshots.

  • Duplicate Item script duplicates an item
importScript( 'User:Magnus_Manske/duplicate_item.js' );

To use gadgets: Gadgets are plug-ins to enhance Wikidata display and editing. To add gadgets, go to the Preferences page while logged in and click the "Gadgets" tab.
