based on matching link[edit]

Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Generic

Descriptionthis external ID was added because the following link was presented in both the external database and the Wikidata item
Data typeItem
Example 1The Turing Test (Q26973017)HowLongToBeat ID (P2816)"38891"based on matching linkSteam (Q337535)Steam application ID (P1733)"499520" (as a source to this edit)
Example 2The Settlers IV (Q2363298)Mod DB game ID (P6774)"the-settlers-iv"based on matching linkGOG.com (Q1486288)GOG application ID (P2725)"game/the_settlers_4_gold_edition" (as a source to this edit)
Example 3Hades II (Q115641620)PCGamingWiki ID (P6337)"Hades_II"based on matching linkSteam (Q337535)Steam application ID (P1733)"1145350" (as a source to this edit)
Planned useto cite the sources during automated external ID addition, me & Nicereddy have a bunch of scripts doing that

Motivation[edit]

If database A links to database B, Wikidata item links to A, we can extract a link to B and use stated in (P248)=A as a source. However if Wikidata item links to B, we still can figure out the link to A, and there is no suitable property to use as a source. If you'll use stated in (P248)=B, it would look like "if you need confirmation, you need to open database B and search for a mention of database A", while in the reality it's the opposite.

Currently I'm adding such links without any source, just mentioning the logic behind the edit in the description (see examples above). I can see at least one major downside about this: if an item had incorrect link to, say, Steam, the bots woldn't be able to understand it and would add links to IGDB, PCGamingWiki, RAWG, HLTB, RiotPixels, and many more databases normally. A human might later review the item and remove incorrect Steam link, but they might miss some of the furtherly added links since they contain no hint about their origin. Hence the proposal: it would be easier to resoulve such situations if these links had "based on matching link"=Steam (Q337535) set as a source.

I'm not sure how to label and describe this property properly tho. Also I'm not sure whether we should limit matching values to external links; in theory, it's possible to match an item based on equal developer (P178) and publication date (P577), for instance. If you have any good ideas, feel free to change it Facenapalm (talk) 18:34, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Support the idea, but want to discuss a name of the property. Maybe we should use something more straightforward like "matched by ID from". Because from the example it can be not only a link, but any form of reference to the ID that we already have in Wikidata. —putnik 20:25, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Conditional support this is a good idea, but this should be limited to references. Also take note of putnik's comment. —Tomodachi94 (talk) 01:09, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Support, it seems to be a necessary property. Wikisaurus (talk) 17:55, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
