Motivation
[edit]We already have Patreon ID (P4175) which, at time of writing, has 1,253 uses. However, this is only what Patreon calls the "Patreon page URL". This is essentially a "vanity link" that Patreon creators can change at any time (i.e. it is not persistent). In theory, Person A could change their vanity link to something else, and then Person B could claim Person A's original vanity link. This is not ideal as an external identifier.
Numeric IDs, on the other hand, persist even when the user changes their vanity link. This means we can reference their numeric ID and this will continue to hold true without any need to update it in future (unless the user makes a new Patreon account).
This is similar to the situation with Twitter usernames and IDs. Patreon ID (P4175) is analogous to X username (P2002) (i.e. a username that can be changed at any time). Whereas what I propose is the Patreon equivalent of X numeric user ID (P6552). The use of two properties for Twitter (one for the username and one for the numeric ID) has been quite successful on Wikidata, so I think we should have the same for Patreon (and other websites/services where this is possible).
And perhaps the most important point: not all Patreon creators have set a vanity link. This is an optional field within Patreon, so for several creators, this value is null. As such, the only way to reference these creators is to use their numeric ID. Examples 2, 3 and 4 above are all in this situation. If we do not introduce the proposed property, then we cannot properly reference their Patreon accounts as external identifiers.
To briefly explain how you can find the numeric ID for a Patreon creator, the easiest way is to go to their Patreon page, open up the browser console and enter patreon.bootstrap.campaign.data.relationships.creator.data.id
. The JSON object with this data can also be found in the page source. Yirba (talk) 14:44, 2 February 2023 (UTC)
Update: Moved the topic from person to authority control which, in retrospect, seems a better fit (after all, not all Patreon accounts represent a particular person). --Yirba (talk) 09:55, 3 February 2023 (UTC)
