Babel

[edit]

Babel lets you view and edit more than one language on Wikidata. Just add e.g. {{#babel:de-N|en-3|es-1|fr-2|nl-3|it-4|da-0}} to your user page. With the same language codes you can add links to your userpage on Wikipedia e.g. de:User:User123. --Tobias1984 (talk) 22:28, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

hello Tobias, don't get too technical, thank you for your help. ChristiaanPR (talk) 23:34, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. --Tobias1984 (talk) 07:13, 25 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Urban Area

[edit]

Salut Christiaan, regarding this request on the Project chat:

French translation for Urban area
In my opinion fr:Aire urbaine is a better translation for en:Urban area then fr:Région urbaine as it is translated now. I am dutch myself. ChristiaanPR (talk) 08:19, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

a) You indicate references to pages on French Wikipedia while you are on English Wikidata; Wikidata has no control on names of pages on Wikipedias, only on the multi-language labels of the represented concept;

b) You seem to mix up three distinct concepts:

  1. urban area (Q702492) ("région urbaine") is a concept defined by Statistiques Canada and both French and English label versions are dictated by the latter;
  2. urban unit (Q1479822) ("unité urbaine") is a concept similarly defined by the INSEE for France;
  3. metropolitan area (Q1907114) ("aire urbaine") is a the commonly understood concept of the densely populated area around a city.

In my opinion these labels are adequate, but you may add aliases or improve their descriptions if you feel they are not adequate.

hello LaddQ, On the dutch Wikipedia I have found another dutch translation, a word that was new for me also. Maybe you are right. I think that the words the most used in different languages should point to each other. That is hard to decide, so I am fine to leave it as it is. ChristiaanPR (talk) 04:16, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Fair. Please note that you would benefit from installing the Babel tool on your user page User:ChristiaanPR: it would allow you to see labels & descriptions in multiple languages at the same time on any Wikidata item page: Dutch, English, French... In your case, you could start with {{#babel:nl-N|en-2|fr-2|de-3}} I guess - LaddΩ chat ;) 14:35, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
