Putting the wiki in read-only mode can lead some bots to fail.

Proper bots will just wait a bit and continue. Humans won't be able to edit so it should be announced to the humans, not the bots.

Agreed, even if not all bots are written with the same quality.

The problem is posting to the right place. We have hundred of pages where we post this message, and some of them are missing. This is also why we rely on volunteers to help us spreading the word.

I recall seeing this message on different village pumps in the past. Maybe someone updated your send list because they were tired of seeing it?

It is a plausible explanation, even if a quite egoistic move.
