This has a lot of problems, and conflicts with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_numbering_plan#Area_code by its title (local dialing code) ,and description. (identifier dedicated to subject city by the area communication network). it is so messed up in infoboxes as phone code vs area code.Wikidata:Property_proposal/Archive/6#P473 .

and in the examples (812) and (02) are area codes.it all started as https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Property:P473&oldid=32001351 and has evolved in too the wrong thing.,local calling code, telephone prefix, local dialling code, Subscriber trunk dialling (STD).

this property allows you to display a number without a Q.

so if you wanted to tell people what code Le Marais (Q749573) was in like the time zone you could,

for people who do not live there or for business looking etc.

as it says in these wiki's the telephone came to Europe from usa bell patents.

United_States_area_code_"?

this argument assumes that the word "area code" being a usa thing is the wrong word for europe etc.

but it is the industry that has adopted it in europe, as phone systems needed another set of #'s.

so i put my name change on the talk page and hope it will not start a war like this one.

that is the way it is being used, on wiki pages and https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Property:P473&oldid=32001351 there were no statements.

"local dialing code" is more in line with (Q949616).

If you haven't noticed yet, you're being ignored, and probably for a good reason. If you actually care about this you should post on Wikidata:Project chat, but I still don't really understand why you think it's wrong to call an area code a local dialling code.

if you look at the industry standards USA NANP and the International Telecommunication Union that is not the names used.

what is being spread here is fake news.

t_p_t

you are the expert are you going to way in on this ?

Tpt (talkcontribs)

Hello 50.254.21.213, I am definitely not an expert on telecommunication-related subjects, I just try too keep Wikidata clean. Indeed it seems that local dialing code (P473) may not be used for cities but also other kind of places. Instead of getting into an "edit-war" with other contributor, please start a kind discussion in the property talk page explaining in easy to understand English why you want to do this change.

PS: By convention we set as value for the phone number (P1329) property the full phone number including prefixes in the RFC 3966 format without the "tel:" prefix. So, no need to bother with the prefix. It has the strong advantage to allow data user to easily parse, validate and represent a phone number without having to deal with external statements and qualifiers.

50.254.21.213 (talkcontribs)

then why does p_474 exist ?

50.254.21.213 (talkcontribs)

what is it good for ?

Tpt (talkcontribs)
50.254.21.213 (talkcontribs)

but why do we need p_474 ?, if the bot puts it in, in the usa we leave out +1 when telling people are no's

look at web sites business cards etc.

in the usa 333 is the area code, part of the 1947, 3-3-4 plan, and -444, is the prefix, centrel office code.

and we dial 1 first, 1-333, to tell the system that 333 is the area code and not the central office code.

because there could be a repeat 333-333-5555, because with out 1 it would be 333-4444

333-4445
