Hide errors… under the carpet[edit]

@Jura1: I was in the process of adding the item of property constraint (P2305) intended for Wikibase MediaInfo (Q59712033) for Commons Structured Data (since there is no direct way to add it yet). By the way, I was fixing a few properties with some errors or violations.

We cannot put an exception every time it suits us, otherwise the constraint is no longer useful. This is not the right method. Wikimedia import URL (P4656) allows sourcing and doesn't work otherwise. Instead, it would be better to explain why it seems important to you to put this url with reference URL (P854). What I did makes sense and doesn't cause an error. You have clarified the syntax yourself on P854. P854 is not essential to inception (P571). I would point out to you that WD is a collaborative project. Could you explain yourself before removing my edit, please? Regards. —Eihel (talk) 17:50, 20 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe you can explain why the url isn't a suitable reference for the statement? --- Jura 18:14, 20 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jura1: Do not hesitate to notify me if you want to write to me, I cannot be everywhere waiting for you to write to me. At the risk of repeating myself, Wikimedia import URL (P4656) is also used for sourcing. The properties do not change except that one is for external links and the other is for internal links. And internal links are not references in WM, it should be remembered. My modification makes sense to the point that you wrote some syntax clarification (P2916) and you put an exception there. Why? I ask you the question again. —Eihel (talk) 18:26, 20 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No, Wikimedia import URL (P4656) is not for actual references. Where did you get that information from? --- Jura 18:30, 20 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wikimedia import URL (P4656)instance of (P31)Wikidata property to indicate a source (Q18608359) or Wikimedia import URL (P4656)property constraint (P2302)property scope constraint (Q53869507)property scope (P5314)as reference (Q54828450)
P4656 is not considered to be the best source, as it is a WM page. But if you have a URL that is not in WM that can replace the WD URL, you can change it using P854. This is what is described in Help: Sources # Different types of sources. In any case a WM url should not be used with P854. —Eihel (talk) 18:46, 20 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The statements you show just indicate in which part of a Wikidata statement the property is used. It doesn't actually tell you when to use it.
The idea is to use Wikimedia import URL (P4656) when we import a statement from Wikipedia, in cases where Wikipedia is only the intermediate source, e.g. Q42 was born on 11 March 1952 as found in https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&oldid=983715781
However, if we state that the Wikipedia article about Douglas Adams was first created on 9 November 2001, we can well use https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Douglas_Adams&oldid=347478646 as reference in reference URL (P854). --- Jura 04:52, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Based on your past on Wikidata, your first paragraph is curious: a screw and a nut work together and form the bolt. But you are free to use the nut as a decoration. Here, the references have a precise use. You can use the properties in other ways, but sooner or later, your edit will be changed or removed, even if you created the page. Everything in the References part is a reference and if a property is used in References, it allows referencing. The sourcing of other projects cannot take WD as a reference. WD with P4656 is the only project to use this type of ref and propagate information. References in WM other than WD (not just WP, but except WikiQuote) use trusted secondary sources. These are put in P854. If you use one of the 2 import properties on WM, you don't use P854 and the info is in WM. If you want to use P854 anyway, you have to look for the external ref (ie completely external to WM). This is what the constraints are for. So if you're using Douglas Adams' article, you should not use P854. Now you can ask the question on the Project:Chat to find out what it really is. ChristianKl proposed Wikimedia import URL (P4656) for this use. —Eihel (talk) 15:42, 21 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand your argument. Somehow you keep digressing from the question at hand. At least, I agree this is not the place to discuss it. --- Jura 09:47, 22 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
