FIFA (Men's) World Rankings[edit]

@Coining: Regarding Special:Diff/2071127381/2119232830 and your messages in #wikidataconnect earlier today (which I unfortunately only saw after you left): Please don’t do this. The meaning / identity of Wikidata items should generally remain stable over time; this item previously referred to the FIFA World Rankings in general, and many of the connected Wikipedia articles still seem to cover both men’s and women’s rankings (e.g. de:FIFA-Weltrangliste), so the item should not have been changed to be specific to the men’s rankings. (I wasn’t able to find a comprehensive documentation page on this, but it’s at least mentioned on Wikidata:Glossary#Repurposing, and elaborated for redirects in particular on Help:Redirects#Rules for redirecting, as well as [search for “stable”] Wikidata:Requests for comment/Redirect vs. deletion.) If a Wikipedia article’s subject shifts, it should be linked to a different item (in this case, probably a new item, to mirror FIFA Women's World Rankings (Q913501) – or at least, I can’t find another existing item that fits); sitelinks to redirects can be used to connect Wikipedia language editions where the articles are split somewhat differently (e.g. FIFA Women's World Rankings (Q913501) / en:FIFA Women's World Ranking can link to de:FIFA-Frauen-Weltrangliste). Apologies. I was trying to effectuate the discussion on [the Template: Official website talk page], but as the primary issue raised in that discussion has been addressed, I'll leave disambiguating the Wikidata page to others. Coining (talk) 16:16, 4 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, thanks for the pointer (I’ve now replied there too). I’ve created FIFA Men's World Rankings (Q125351662) now and will try to move some sitelinks around sensibly, but feel free to edit it as well. Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 18:12, 5 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Admittedly, this leaves en:FIFA Men's World Ranking with fewer language links than before. In principle, it would be both possible and IMHO reasonable to add a template on that article which reads all the sitelinks from a different item, such as FIFA World Rankings (Q180825), and adds them if no sitelink for the same language exists on the connected item, i.e. FIFA Men's World Rankings (Q125351662). But I don’t know if English Wikipedia has such a template. (Incubator has something similar at Template:INTERWIKI, though I don’t think it checks for existing sitelinks.) Aha, it does exist! It’s called Template:Interwiki extra, and I’ve just added it to en:FIFA Men's World Ranking. Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 14:11, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
