Different items[edit]

Why are three items for Galina?

  1. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q47538105 for many languages, most of them with title Galina, as the et:Galina
  2. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q123699 for ru:Галина, et:Galina and ru:Галина
  3. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q61648518 for only uk:Галина

let's read some of this article

  • en:Galina --> Galina (Cyrillic: Галина; from Greek γαλήνη "Serenity")
  • de:Galina --> Der Name Galina kommt von griechisch γαλήνη
  • uk:Галина --> Галина (грец. Γαλήνη — спокій, тиша, штиль на морі) — жіноче ім'я грецького походження. Поширене в Східній Європі, зокрема й в Україні. No matter that is transcripted like Halina, alwalys?, but it's probably like the name in item 1), with common Greek origin and the same meaning.
  • bg:Галина --> Галина или Галя е българско женско име, женска форма на Галин и Гало. Произлиза от глагола галя, тоест детето кръстено с това име да бъде галено, обичано No mention of Greek origin, so is different from the Russian articole, so they shoud not stay together.
  • et:Galina --> Galina (vene Галина) on venepärane naisenimi. no mention of ethimology
  • ru:Галина --> Галина (от др.-греч. γαλήνη, галэ́нэ — спокойствие, безмятежность, штиль [на море], тишина) — женское имя. No mention that is a Russian, but Greeek origin, so it should stay together with item 1)
  • az:Qalina --> it's included in the item 1) no matter is Qalina and not Galina. It's more important that is a common name, non the alphabet in which is written in.

Just some consideration, I'will not change nothing in the interwiki, just I notice the absurd situation in IMHO. MrKeefeJohn (talk) 14:17, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@MrKeefeJohn: You can look up discussions related to this at Wikidata:WikiProject_Names; it's not restricted to Galina/Halina/Halyna/Галина/Qalina/Галіна but concerns all names. - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 15:02, 25 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@MrKeefeJohn: What can you say about the other equivalent in en-wiki: Q16276196. How would you organize it? --Infovarius (talk) 19:22, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps the problem here lies in the vague understanding of what being "the same" means for names. Here we have two items, basically one for Galina and the other for Галина. Yet most of the Wikipedia articles, most of the name items in Wikidata, and to a large part, even these two, treat same or even similar names in different scripts as still "the same" name. E.g., we have Q4925477 for John but no separate item for Джон, the Russian article is happily connected to the same item. Also, both Q123699 and Q47538105 count "equivalents" in both Latin and Cyrillic scripts, and there is no Wikipedia that would have separate articles about those two. So, perhaps keeping such items separate in some cases and merged in most cases is not a very clear practice. At the very least, the people who consider it is good and reasonable, should try to rewrite the item descriptions so that those who are not familiar with this little peculiarity could see from the very start what the difference is, not needing to analyze different items meticulously in comparison just to be able to connect other items to them. --Ehitaja (talk) 14:33, 29 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
