- Abstract
- Many major cultural institutions have donated collection metadata and authority control data to Wikidata. There are WikiProjects, such as sum of all paintings, to improve and curate these data by, for example, linking objects to their creators or associated items, and tools like Mix’N’Match to link Wikidata items to authority data. There has, however, been little systematic collaboration between GLAM institutions to enhance or reuse their data within Wikidata. This talk will begin by suggesting tasks and projects in Wikidata that could feasibly become foci for collaborative work by GLAMs before outlining the potential benefits that can be realised through such collaboration. Next, extant barriers to collaboration are considered, including, for example, a lack of awareness of other projects and the difficulties in establishing a mutually beneficial partnership between two or more institutions. The session concludes by questioning whether a framework to facilitate inter-institutional collaboration is required.
