Meeting Notes[edit]

Topic 1[edit]

  • Andy Mabbett (Wikimedian in Residence) on the "Cite Q" template that uses data from Wikidata in Wikipedia citations
    • Worked in Wikipedia since 2003 and been involved with Wikidata since before it’s inception: User: Pigsonthewing
    • Cite Q exists to avoid repetitive work
    • Most cited paper on Wikipedia has markup that consists of 416 characters–this paper been cited 2.8 million times!
      • Each of these citations have variations: some have DOI, differing capitalization, linking to authors (or not), several permutations of metadata.
      • 2.8 million x 416 characters: = 1.1648 Gigabytes
    • Alternative is Cite Q: wiki-code is: {{Cite Q|Q21030635}}
      • Template wraps en.Wikipedia’s Template:Citation: Calls in metadata from Wikidata, processes and formats it, and puts it on Wikipedia
      • Already used on ~52,000 en.Wikipedia pages
      • Transferable to other projects
      • Output is multilingual, thanks to Wikidata
      • Template is extensible or overridable (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Cite_Q/testcases)
        • Example {{Cite Q|Q12345|pages=42-48}}
        • Author-mask, display-authors; quote=
      • Want to get Cite Q into Citoid (RefToolbar): If you enter DOI into Citoid, will populate rest of metadata into fields (author, etc.); Would like it to also detect if there is a Wikidata page and pull data from Wikidata item. There are at least 2 different requests if you’d like to explore them:
        • Phabricator
        • the Community Wishlist: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2022/Citations#Add_support_for_the_'Cite_Q'_template_to_Citoid
      • Next for Cite Q
        • Fix outstanding issues (see template page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Cite_Q )
        • Feature requests: one of them is to enable template to show Harvard style citations
        • Allow user to express preferences for citation style
        • Share code across projects [[meta:Global templates]]
        • Further internationalize outputs
        • Resolve community issues
      • Further reading & examples

Q&A

  • Q: if we get Citations stored in a DB (whatever project proposal that was in the past) and searchable and indexed, then we fix the overall problem.
  • Do you have updates on us eventually having a central database to store References and Citations?  It was proposed here:  https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiCite
    • A: The two links above represent a couple of proposals that overlap. First one is to have a database of all the citations for all the Wikimedia projects, whether it’s academic articles, journals, tweets. It would help to internationalize and re-use. Very early days: basically a whitepaper.
    • The second proposal affects Wikidata: Building a database of Wikimedia citation records. Currently nearly ⅓ of Wikidata consists of citations that have been harvested from ORCID, etc., but there are concerns about the scalability of the triplestore database (Blazegraph) in being able to handle this quantity. One solution proposed is to remove these citations from Wikidata’s triplestore which would affect all the queries that currently use this data; supplementary proposal is to create a Wikimedia database for all the academic literature. This proposal is still in early days too.
  • Are you hopeful that Wikicite will get some funding this year?
    • Andy: Hopeful that it will go forward. People shouldn’t be put off from adding citations to Wikidata or using Wikicite as the number we add won’t affect performance (in comparison to mass harvesting); Thad Guidry: agreed & don’t slow the data flow just for worries over scaling, there are some smart people addressing this.
  • Future of bibliographic parameters in the digital world
    • Is an advantage of having citations in Wikidata which can be programmatically queried and updated.

Topic 2[edit]

  • Crystal Clements (University of Washington) on crowdsourcing resources and needs to inform best practices re: representation of gender (and personal demographic information more broadly) for persons in Wikidata:
    • The Wikidata community lacks clear rules and best practices that respect self-declared identities or consent for the publication of gender and other personal demographic information in Wikidata. For groups with differing motivations and practices to move forward together, there is an urgent need for consensus points and shared guidelines which are intentional about gender-inclusivity and consent.
    • We hope to put together a set of consensus points and best practices in the months ahead. Today’s (February 8th) call will be an info-gathering opportunity to inform this process. We ask that you consider the following questions, and use this Google Doc [link removed, past feedback date] to record any resources, thoughts, or experiences you think would be helpful by the end of the day on February 15th:
      • Do you know of any resources that could be useful in a conversation or development of best practices surrounding gender and demographic information about living and deceased persons represented in Wikidata?
      • Have you had any experiences or interactions that might inform the discussion?
        • To give folks time and space to process, we ask that you write down your experiences and share them in the Google Doc rather than live in the Zoom meeting. Thank you!
      • What would you find helpful in terms of best practices or guidelines as a Wikidata editor and metadata creator?
    • Please be kind and respectful to others. Consult the LD4P Community Participation Guidelines prior to participating in this discussion.
