Call details[edit]
- Date: 2019-10-08
- Topic: Wikiproject Practical Wikidata for Librarians and Monumental tool
- Presenters: Hilary Thorsen
Presentation material[edit]
Notes[edit]
- Practical Wikidata for Librarians
- Practical Wikidata for Librarians project born out of desire to gather more resources for librarians interested in adding GLAM data to Wikidata/Wikidata more generally - https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Linked_Data_for_Production/Practical_Wikidata_for_Librarians (also linked above)
- If you have any resources, exercises, work you have done, etc., you are welcome to share it in the space and/or email/slack to Hilary.
- Adding GLAMs to Wikdata
- A couple of projects in Wikiverse to add GLAM data to Wiki projects including Wikidata, adding images to Commons, etc. Campaign running October 8 - 29 and open to everyone to participate. Great entry point to Wikidata for those who are interested in the site.
- Today we will cover adding libraries, archives, museums, and demo Monumental tool.
- At Tuesday 10/22 we will look at adding institutions via data set through Open Refine - how to reconcile the data set and create schema in Wikidata to add content.
- As part of this month, there are working hours where Hilary and/or Esther is available at certain times for anyone who wants to get together and work on adding institutions to Wikidata. Also a time for questions and discussion about modeling issues. (Times can be viewed in slides - please send Hilary a request if there is a better time for you as we can add times.)
- Monumental tool
- Monumental tool is to explore cultural institutions around the world. (https://tools.wmflabs.org/monumental-glam/#/ - also linked above)
- Will populate with GLAMs nearby to you once you enable location access
- Tool uses data from Wikidata, Wikipedia, and Commons and also highlights what may be missing. For example, some institutions may not have images in Commons, etc.
- You may find that a lot of libraries in your area have a Wikidata record, but there is information missing such as the address, hours, social media links, etc. Lots of opportunities to add information.
- Great way to edit Wikdiata content without having to edit on Wikidata itself - friendly for new editors.
- If you really prefer to work in Wikidata directly, you can navigate there from the Monumental tool.
- In future calls Hilary may demo how to add an image to Commons as well - this is really valuable to add for your GLAM or others
- How to create a new Wikidata item for a library
- See slides for links to resources, such as Dan Scott’s article (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1_1tq59YFplKsiryL4rqgHBhrPU5FkGG3/edit#slide=id.p8 - also linked above)
- See SPARQL queries in slides for examples of GLAMs missing certain data in Wikidata that can be added. Please add official web sites, social media links, and labels in your own language for items that lack them. https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Heritage_institutions/Tools_%26_tasks#Sample_Queries_for_libraries
- Cradle template details the kinds of information you would expect to find for a library in Wikidata. This template can be used as a model if creating a new Wikidata item for an institution not in Wikidata.
- Many properties can be added - adding coordinates is a super useful thing to add. You can find these through places like Open Street Map and Google Maps. (Esther’s note - you can also edit records in Open Street Map while you are editing in Wikidata if you are interested in doing so.) (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1_1tq59YFplKsiryL4rqgHBhrPU5FkGG3/edit#slide=id.p11 also linked above)
- Adding information about museums - a lot of overlap, but a few more specific properties (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1_1tq59YFplKsiryL4rqgHBhrPU5FkGG3/edit#slide=id.p11 also linked above)
- Adding information about archives (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1_1tq59YFplKsiryL4rqgHBhrPU5FkGG3/edit#slide=id.p11 also linked above)
- In looking for resources for GLAMs to add, you can use print resources such as the Special Libraries Association directories as starting points. You will want to double-check that any information is still up to date - however, it’s a nice place to start if you want to try your hand at editing but don’t have a specific area you want to start. ttps://drive.google.com/drive/folders/12wqHwhRlZ_AZHwzguV63iq4zPzVpk62S
