- What are the ‘entities that matter’ to this object: Reflections on the OCLC Linked Data Wikibase Pilot
- Wikidata Tutorial 2 (Tools and methods for Wikidata collections discovery and modeling) - Andrew Lih - and using Wikidata to explain linked data (Susan Radovsky)
- Participants were smart thoughtful and engaged
- Still considering what linked data means in libraries
- Plenty of tools, including batch editing described
- Diverse institutions participating in the discussion
- Last session of the meeting, Stacy Allison-Cassin made the point that Wikidata and related tooling gives an opportunity for anyone interested in linked data to interact directly with an existing system that shows changes in real-time
- Judith Cannan- interested in seeing how LC can fold Wikidata into LC related linked data training.
- Karen Smith-Yoshimura found interesting that there was more Wikidata than BF discussions at the LD4 Conference
- Women in Red project and women mayors from Oregon in Wikidata (Lori Robare)
- Lori (from Eugene, OR) locally has had a woman Mayor for sometime, new to Linked Data, new to identity management
- First searched for a known politician who already existed in Wikidata, wanted to add the specific position of mayor, added qualifiers, still incomplete (mayor of what), when adding the mayor statement it made sense, but then looked for other ways to capture this type of information, used the wikidata query service, started with an existing query (largest cities with women mayors) upped the LIMIT to 20. Found “Mayor of CITY” pattern. Decided that seeing more US cities would be helpful; used the Wikidata Vizquery tool to make quick queries. Still felt a little hesitant, proliferation of terms for each city and differentiation between cities. A lot to adjust to. Can see who has held the office easily with the specific mayoral office. Still seeing inconsistent practice. Learn about SQID to navigate classes and understand usage. Found a project page giving guidance, that was really helpful. Still adjusting to not having documentation explaining exactly what to do; wrote the project chat page with the question, the conversation was useful, confirmed Lori’s suspicion that actual mayoral offices are filling these out.
- (Martin Poulter) Here’s a graph illustrating connections between a specific mayoral office, specific mayor and place: https://w.wiki/4cj
- Scott - any thoughts on how this plays out with respect to different languages? Lori, yes interesting how we might adjust for different languages.
- PUWL - Would mayor of be more efficient
- Kristina Spurgin - Creating items for "Mayor of X" lets us make statements about that office--- official residence, term, etc. It also makes querying easier
- Community consensus decides practice
- An Experiment with Name Entities in Wikidata at University of Tennessee Libraries (Anchalee (Joy) Panigabutra-Roberts)
- Joy - sharing lessons with new experiences with Wikidata, researcher ID’s
- Use case- create a new one for their publications
- People working for/associated with UT.
- Explored tools, used ORCIDator and queried Scholia
- Need to add type and other information to make the description complete.
- Reasonator makes a more human readable interface
- Focus on book chapters, papers in conference proceedings
- To create a book chapter, had to create the book, other authors then added their chapters. “If you build it they will come.”
- Book from example: https://litwinbooks.com/books/ethical-questions-in-name-authority-control/
- Will expand more on products at OCLC’s Linked Data Round Table at ALA
- Can create a timeline of publications
- Also used SQID (like Lori), once connected to LC Authority the VIAF was automatically added.
- Doesn’t publish under Thai name, but still could be useful to see that for some users
- Took a picture of UT statue (the Volunteer Statue) and added it to Wikimedia Commons so that it could be used in Wikidata
- Used the Statue of Liberty as a model example to understand how to describe this similar object.
- Used Pokemon Go on phone to get coordinates :)
- Need to use the expected coordinate standard, enables map exploration.
- Asked to describe orientation, which direction is the statue facing
- Added family members to music conductor from UT, and work by related person, collaborations.
- Sees Wikidata as part of the strategy along with NACO, etc. to do authority control
- Symbiosis between metadata work and machine techniques like AI, but don’t want singularity
- Revised version of the LD4 Conference’s presentation (added issues on images and maps in Wikidata): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oalWzbAlYacRMemRjRaQcEUj48tHGQhE/view?usp=sharing
- Joy - sharing lessons with new experiences with Wikidata, researcher ID’s
- Developing workflows for local authority file conversion from MARC to Wikidata and Wikimania OpenRefine workshop (Honor Moody)
- Did some batch creation using a subset of local authorities, exploring strategies for continuing to make use of data after a system migration, knowing that not all could be migrated into Wikidata easily.
- Got some initial truth statements, then hand added other information
- Explored the use of Open Refine for semi-automated data.
- A bunch of acronyms
- Future work, possible a workshop to explore related workflows, including regex, etc.
- Package with a series of queries
- Question: how much clean up?
- Left some data behind, less focus on left anchored search.
