Motivation[edit]

For a medical intervention to be carried out on a patient, there must generally be a medical reason (exceptions and edge cases exist, e.g. for training purposes or control groups in clinical trials). These medical reasons are commonly termed indication (Q496997)  View with Reasonator View with SQIDView profile on Scholia}, i.e. conditions under which a particular medical intervention is expected to have a net benefit based on the available evidence on the impact of the intervention under circumstances comparable to those of the case in question. The main benefits may be diagnostic or therapeutic in nature, as per diagnostic indication (Q110971671)  View with Reasonator View with SQIDView profile on Scholia and therapeutic indication (Q86740531)  View with Reasonator View with SQIDView profile on Scholia. For therapeutic ones, medical condition treated (P2175) View with SQIDView profile on Scholia is a close match but I do not see a good way to express diagnostic ones (as in example 2), nor contraindication (Q1848900)  View with Reasonator View with SQIDView profile on Scholia (e.g. some types of pacemakers are unsuitable for Magnetic Resonance Imaging), so I am starting this discussion to clarify the data model used in this area. Discussion[edit]

@ArthurPSmith: I think if we go for a property medical indication as proposed here, we should probably start a companion property for counterindication. If we do not create the property proposed here, the discussion for counterindication might take another turn. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 22:43, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
