Motivation[edit]

The Athletic is a news outlet owned by The New York Times covering a wide range of sports. They now have player pages on their site, which includes statistical information about the player as well as an archive of every article they've ever published that mentions the player.

Note that there are multiple formatter URLs for this property -- the URL includes "football", "nfl", "mlb", etc depending on which sport/league the player is in. However, if you link to the wrong sport, the site will automatically redirect to the correct URL, so it won't cause issues for us (try out the examples above -- besides Erling Haaland, the URL will automatically change from "football" to the correct sport).

If a player has been in multiple leagues (e.g. NCAAF + NFL, NCAAB + NBA), they will end up having multiple pages (see example 5 above). However, I believe The Athletic's system considers all of association football to be one "league", so I don't believe two pages would be created when a player goes, say, from Major League Soccer to the Premier League. Right now I'm proposing that we have a single-value constraint with league (P118) as a separator (P4155). This could become a problem if we had an athlete who played association football (in multiple leagues) and another sport, because then we couldn't use league (P118) as a separator so cleanly. If the situation ever arises, we may need to add sport (P641) as another separator; however, I'm not sure if there is even one player right now who fits that description, so I'm not terribly worried about it.
