Citation Typing Ontology (CiTO)

About[edit]

The Citation Typing Ontology (CiTO) is an ontology that enables characterization of the nature or type of citations, both factually and rhetorically.

Why it matters[edit]

Categorised citations support the understanding of how scientific information is used through future publications. Therefore, it helps science and the peer-review system in science.

CiTO as a Wiki-ecosystem[edit]

Because giving meaning to citations matters, as aforementioned, researchers find value on bringing categorized citations to fit the umbrella of Wiki-ecosystems, which supports transparency through all angles. Consequently, the nature of any citation is open to debate. Furthermore, categories of citations are open to discussion so that current categories can be adjusted, removed or merged into a larger category.
