Royal Navy ships[edit]

Hello, this is regarding your request on Mike Peel's talk page regarding the import of information for Royal Navy Ships. As stated by Mike Peel, I will be looking into it. :)
I was confused about the property IDs that I needed to assign to the dates like launch, commission and order dates - I could not find appropriate properties in the list of properties - I wonder if the usage of inception (P571) and service entry (P729) would be fine. As an alternative, I found Wikidata items of ship commissioning (Q14475832) and ship launching (Q596643) which can be added as qualifiers to key event (ships) (Q14904124) - but I am not sure how to add them as qualifiers, if I were to (for example, to which value should these be added to as qualifiers). Do you happen to have any ideas or suggestions about this? Nirali Sahoo (talk) 11:14, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Nirali Sahoo, Nirali Sahoo: Hi Nirali, There was a discussion here here on the subject. This may give some guidance. Regardless of what was said there, about many wiki projects, only English Wikipedia matters. It follows the National Maritime Museum and other influential government bodies/sources that lay down the standards. We should derive our data from English Wikipedia infoboxes, and adopt the nomenclature it uses.
The key dates are:
Laid Down (this is the same as Keel laid)
Launched
Commissioned. This is the date Wikidata calls Service entry.
In fact these titles could be (should be) named: Laid Down (ship); Launched (ship); Commissioned (ship). These are the three we want.
"Ceremonial ship launching" should be renamed in wikidata to Launched (ship); a ship can only be launched once. It's a fixed date. This is what some commons people don't get. This is the only defined date in shipping, all these other key events actually cover spans of time. The dates in Wikipedia are completion dates for these events. That's what we should use the completion dates.
ship commissioning (Q14475832) is interesting. Commissioning seldom takes a day, it can take weeks. Ignore this. Far better to follow Wikipedia and use commissioned meaning the day that commissioning was completed.
Yes. they are all key events key event (ships) (Q14904124)
Wikipedia infoboxes are I think standardised, so no problem there...
Hope this helps... Broichmore (talk) 12:16, 13 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Does this seem okay or do you have any suggestions? Nirali Sahoo (talk) 16:20, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nirali Sahoo, Nirali Sahoo:
Hi Nirali, Looks good!
I would also like to see some information that would help with identifying unknown ships. See commons:Category:Unidentified ships for example the number(s) of masts and funnels. See commons:Category:Ships by number of masts and commons:Category:Ships by number of funnels. Not sure if that can be picked up in an info box. Possibly? They do appear in commons as categories.
See commons:Category:Fully rigged ships
On topic of infoboxes
en:HMS Foudroyant (1798) and en:Cutty Sark have a number of interesting characteristics: class and type, Tons Burthen, tonnage Displacement these are 4 important ones. Possibly lesser importance are the general characteristics. Broichmore (talk) 16:57, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Broichmore: Okay sure! I will look into it. It will be my first time working with Commons so I may need some time exploring things but I will notify you regarding any important updates. :) Nirali Sahoo (talk) 17:22, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nirali Sahoo, Nirali Sahoo: Thanks.
Just noticed that Wikipedia has categories too... Examples en:Category:Five-masted ships and en:Category:Four funnel liners. Broichmore (talk) 18:46, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Broichmore: Thank you! Will check them out as well. Nirali Sahoo (talk) 19:41, 24 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Nirali Sahoo, Nirali Sahoo: Hi, Just some after thoughts.
The prime source of harvestable data is the Wikipedia infobox.
There are two places the numbers of masts can be found. en:Category:Five-masted ships and commons:Category:Five-masted ships. You'll notice they are different. Aside from human error or omission, commons has a larger set of ships. Is it possible to harvest both? I would look to Wikipedia first.
No doubt you are aware that ships can change their names, and that event comes with a date.
A ships lifespan starts when the keel is laid, and ends with its scrapping, or sinking. Sunk boas can be refloated and scrapped later.
All modern ships have a unique en:IMO number. Broichmore (talk) 09:33, 25 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

biographical article[edit]

A biographical article is not a person. You should create a new item for the person described, and link it from the biographical article item using main subject (P921).--GZWDer (talk) 16:44, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Call for participation in the interview study with Wikidata editors[edit]

Dear Broichmore,

I hope you are doing good,

I am Kholoud, a researcher at the King’s College London, and I work on a project as part of my PhD research that develops a personalized recommendation system to suggest Wikidata items for the editors based on their interests and preferences. I am collaborating on this project with Elena Simperl and Miaojing Shi.

I would love to talk with you to know about your current ways to choose the items you work on in Wikidata and understand the factors that might influence such a decision. Your cooperation will give us valuable insights into building a recommender system that can help improve your editing experience.

Participation is completely voluntary. You have the option to withdraw at any time. Your data will be processed under the terms of UK data protection law (including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018). The information and data that you provide will remain confidential; it will only be stored on the password-protected computer of the researchers. We will use the results anonymized (?) to provide insights into the practices of the editors in item selection processes for editing and publish the results of the study to a research venue. If you decide to take part, we will ask you to sign a consent form, and you will be given a copy of this consent form to keep.

If you’re interested in participating and have 15-20 minutes to chat (I promise to keep the time!), please either contact me on kholoudsaa@gmail.com or use this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdmmFHaiB20nK14wrQJgfrA18PtmdagyeRib3xGtvzkdn3Lgw/viewform?usp=sf_link with your choice of the times that work for you.

I’ll follow up with you to figure out what method is the best way for us to connect.

Please contact me using the email mentioned above if you have any questions or require more information about this project.

Thank you for considering taking part in this research.

Regards

Kholoud
