Full rocket or just the 2nd stage ?[edit]

Unfortunately for poor us, what Starship designates is not so clear... https://www.spacex.com/starship says:

  • SpaceX's Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket (collectively referred to as Starship) represent a fully reusable transportation system
    • Starship is the fully reusable second stage and has an integrated payload section.
    • SUPER HEAVY: The first stage, or booster, of our next-generation launch vehicle

My proposal:

  • Keep this page Starship (Q62833385) as being the full system (1st and 2nd stage).
  • And add a new item Starship (spacecraft) as being the 2nd stage only.

I have eventually created 1 item for each stage :
  • SpaceX Starship (second stage) (Q92727662)
  • SpaceX Super Heavy (Q92727938)

Unfortunately, SpaceX itself is rather unclear on naming matters, explicitly using "Starship" mostly for just the second stage (with first stage as "Super Heavy"), but also occasionally referring to the entire two-stage vehicle as the "Starship system" (in the payload users guide) or, sometimes, just as "Starship", as on the SpaceX website, for that new launch vehicle. If anyone want to take a look, I just added (in a hidden note, or in a quotation within a source citation in the lede of the English Wikipedia article on SpaceX Starship) the exact and full text from those last two examples.
Moreover, SpaceX does seem to often seem to rename things, even after they've announced a name. (e.g., BFR, then Mars Colonial Transporter (MCT), then Interplanetary Transport System (ITS), then "Starship and Super Heavy" (which is still currently most in use), and then the confusion of using "Starship" both as the name for the fully-reusable 2nd stage (the most radical and new spaceflight technology they are developing) and also, though only in the one location, for the collective of both Starship and Super Heavy. So I think your proposal, Sovxx, to keep the two things separate from a Wikidata perspective is a good idea. As the names change, we can then just "MOVE" the Wikidata items to whatever new names surface. Cheers. N2e (talk) 03:53, 18 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
