Blackheath, 1824 ?

[edit]

There was a Lieut. Francis Laird who died on 20 October 1824 at Blackheath. "He had long suffered under a severe illness, which he bore with firmness. He was a man of varied attainments in science and literature. He was distinguished for moral qualities, and a very kind disposition; and all who knew him professionally, and otherwise, held his talents in high respect, and his character in warm estimation." (The New Monthly) [1]

A Francis Laird was buried at St Bride's, Fleet Street on 26 October 1824 [2] -- presumably the same man(?). According to the indexed record he was 56, meaning he would have been born in about 1768. [3] Jheald (talk) 21:26, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Identified as "F.C. Laird, R.N." / "Lieut. R.N." in two catalogues by William Strong, explaining the pseudonym "George Howard" used for the biographies of Wolsey and Lady Jane Grey. [4], [5]. Also one more: "the late F.C. Laird, Lieut R.N." [6] (1834) Jheald (talk) 21:43, 18 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
