@Nikki, Andreasmperu: What is the difference between this and abandoned village (Q350895). Especially considering that they both have topic's main category (P910) Category:Former populated places (Q6160222). --Vojtěch Dostál (talk) 21:10, 25 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

To me a former settlement is more broad than an abandoned village. A settlement doesn't have to be a village and "abandoned" implies to me that all the people chose to leave, but that's not true of all former settlements (they can be forcibly emptied rather than abandoned or they can be sunken or destroyed without first being abandoned). I don't think the English page "Abandoned village" should be linked to "Category:Former populated places": If you think "former" and "abandoned" are synonyms, it should link to Category:Former villages (Q8371540) instead. If you don't think they're synonyms, then it's just wrong. - Nikki (talk) 15:10, 26 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Formerly populated places and other former populated places

[edit]

On 7 February 2018 label "former populated places" was changed "formerly populated places". I reverted because, as described in edit summary and as it was explained in description, this changes meaning. Former populated places may be still populated, they are not necessarily formerly populated. This situation and distinction between former and abandoned (or formerly populated) places is also described in Czech Wikipedia article, which is the sole sitelink here. For instance, large part of former popuplated places in Estonia are former populated places because they were merged into neighbouring settlements. Unfortunately, now my revert has been reverted without explanation. As for Russian alias, adjectives упразднённый and упразднённый seem to describe what's formerly populated or abandoned, which, as above, is different. I wasn't sure about other aliases and removed the whole set along with non-matching description in hope that someone will review and re-add some aliases if necessary, instead of entirely reinstating the mix-up. 90.191.81.65 18:38, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There can be another level of historicity: populated place can be abandoned only or demolished too or replaced with another on the same place. I don't know if it is applicable at this item. --Infovarius (talk) 17:54, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I suppose separate items can be created for other kinds of former populated places if it's needed to make certain distinction or it's otherwise useful. Here the label was changed so that it'd apply only to certain kind of former populated places, and it wouldn't be applicable to some other instances that link to this class item. So hopefully you don't mind that I'm going to restore it. 90.191.81.65 06:24, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Also, in case it isn't obvious why I changed the description: label, description, aliases and Wikipedia article weren't matching, and this inevitably produced confusion. I hope there's a better match now and it becomes more clear. Also, if there are instances linking here that really are abandoned or formerly populated then more generic description should still apply to these. If necessary they can be changed to be instances of something more specific. 90.191.81.65 06:42, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
