MobyGames confusion[edit]
MobyGames currently has two pages referring to Virgin Interactive. I believe the distinction they are making is that they refer to Virgin Interactive Entertainment, Inc. as the publisher for games released in the United States, and Avalon Interactive as the publisher for games released in Europe. The aliases listed in Virgin Interactive Entertainment, Inc. are "Virgin Games, Inc." and "Virgin Mastertronic International, Inc.", while the aliases listed in Avalon Interactive are Virgin Interactive Entertainment (Europe) Ltd., Virgin Games, Ltd. (from 1991 to 1993), Virgin Mastertronic Ltd. (from 1988 to 1991), and Virgin Games, Ltd. (from 1983 to 1988). Avalon Interactive explains that Virgin Interactive was rebranded to Avalon Interactive in 2003, but the Virgin Interactive Entertainment, Inc. has no description and does not allude to Avalon Interactive at all, which appears to be an important omission. Neither page explains why they are two separate pages, but looking at the games published by each it appears that Virgin Interactive Entertainment, Inc. is used for American releases and Avalon Interactive is used for European.
In contrast, while Wikipedia also has articles labeled Virgin Interactive and Avalon Interactive, the content of the articles makes it clear that the page about Virgin Interactive is about the company before the 2003 rebranding, and Avalon Entertainment is referring to company afterwards. Most importantly, neither page draws a distinction between what parts of the company released games in which regions, which appears to be the only distinction MobyGames draws between its two pages on the company.
On Wikidata, this item, Q1481820, corresponding to the Wikipedia article Virgin Interactive, is listed as a publisher for 116 games, while the item Q4827587, corresponding to the Wikipedia article Avalon Interactive, is not listed as a publisher for a single game. Therefore I think the best solution for now is to continue listing this page as the publisher for all games that MobyGames claims is published by either of its two pages, and continue avoiding using the Q4827587 item for this purpose.
