The nation's Roman Catholic bishops announced yesterday that they had engaged a major public relations firm and a politically connected polling concern in Washington to conduct a nationwide campaign to persuade both Catholics and non-Catholics to oppose abortion. The bishops are expected to spend $3 million to $5 million on the effort over three to five years.''Given the stakes - life itself - we can do no less,'' said John Cardinal O'Connor, the Archbishop of New York, who made the announcement as chairman of the bishops' Committee for Pro-Life Activities. In their choice of a public relations concern, Hill & Knowlton, and a polling firm, the Wirthlin Group, the bishops have turned to two of the nation's best-known and most influential political and lobbying strategists.
