The generic name of female gender is a compound of the Greek name 'Astarte' (A) for the ancient Levant goddess Athtartu (Ugaritic) or šstrt (Phoenician) and 'seris' (), the classical Greek name for salad (more precisely for Cichorium species, Liddell & al. 1940). Worship of Astarte spread to Cyprus. Often she was equated with Aphrodite, whose mythical place of birth has been localized in Cyprus since ancient times. (English)
