The Picasso was exported from France in 1975 by the Galerie Renou & Poyet without attached provenance. Id. at 9. The current owner of the Renou & Poyet would not revealthe provenance of the Picasso, but stated that "he had the picture onconsignment from a private collector who had obtained the picture from an artdealer who.., had faced a Paris tribunal on having traded with the Germansduring the occupation." Id. The owner promised to "provide the name of theprivate collector and other gallery on the proviso that he was given a holdharmless by the current owner and claimant." Id. The Renou & Poyet wasknown as the Renou & Colle during the war, and was noted in an OSS(forerunner of the current CIA) report as a "Firm of art dealers who handled looted art .... Schenker documents indicate sales to German buyers." Id. at 8-9. (English)
