The repeal of Cook County’s sweetened beverage tax was the first repeal of a beverage tax in the nation - and took place barely two months after it went into effect. Seven commissioners changed their vote for repeal, turning an 8-8 tie into a 15-2 overwhelming vote in support of repeal. For five months, the campaign controlled the conversation, dominated front pages, led newscasts, and overwhelmed social media feeds. Thousands of residents weighed in with County Commissioners in support of repeal. The Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times called the tax’s repeal one of the top three stories of 2017. (English)
