In 1929, O'Brien accepted an offer of $25,000 from Chicago physician David Jones to purchase the Cardinals. Jones' first order of business was to convince Ernie Nevers, the All-America fullback from Stanford, to join the team. Pop Warner, who had coached Nevers as well as Jim Thorpe, was of the opinion that Nevers had a better temperament for the game than did Thorpe. (English)
