Sir William Steward of Houston, commendator of Pittenweem was appointed with the power to grant all commissions for the Highlands and Islands for a specified length of time in order to promote law and order. He was authorised to hold courts for the crimes of fire-raising, ravishing of women, murder, slaughter, counterfitting, false coinage, theft, receiving of stolen property, witchcraft, sorcery, enchantment, sorning, oppression etc. (English)
