Separate lexeme?

[edit]

@Infovarius: I don't think this should be a separate lexeme from row (L7525) : gerund = present participle of the verb in English now in most cases. See en:Gerund for more on this. Where a separate lexeme for an '-ing' form may be needed is where they truly form a noun in their own right, for example by needing a plural. ("rowings" is not something I've ever seen used). For example building (L3870) or bearing (L30096). ArthurPSmith (talk) 20:02, 19 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Noun is completely separate, yes. But gerund can be regarded as verb form, or separate part of speech - it is ambivalent. And I suppose it's enough to have it in separate lexemes. --Infovarius (talk) 17:04, 22 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe any other "gerund" lexemes have been added in English - do you disagree with the statement in enwiki "The objection to the term gerund in English grammar is that -ing forms are frequently used in ways that do not conform to the clear-cut three-way distinction made by traditional grammar into gerunds, participles and nouns."? I think it would be better to only add entries for the verb and noun lexemes - the "gerund" in English is trivially derived from the present participle of the verb lexeme, so I don't see any point in having it separated. Yes, there were no other entry with "gerund" as lexical category in lexeme namespace: https://w.wiki/6rF6 . So, I have redone the redirect. Thanks —Vis M (talk) 19:47, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
