Progetto Biografie at Italian Wikipedia

Biography articles in Italian Wikipedia (Q11920) (itwiki) start with a lead section and an infobox generated by Module:Bio (Q20056553) from Template:Infobox person (Q6249834).

it:Categoria:BioBot includes these articles (about 300,000 as of April 2016). The data can be queried with BioQuery (Q23894606).

To import the data, this page summarizes the mappings and steps. The steps can be repeated once in a while.

Which value to use for instance of (P31)? Which items to use? Which properties to use? Which values for these properties?

Almost all articles with the template (99.93%) have instance of (P31) = human (Q5).

The some 200 exceptions included notably sibling duo (Q14073567), duo (Q15618652) and legendary figure (Q15966903), mythical character (Q4271324).

Existing sitelinks to itwiki have been used.

A few items for articles missing them needed to be created.

A few mismatches were found:

  • articles being linked from disambiguation items
  • individual biography articles linked from items for bands.

This is mainly done by Harvest Templates (Q21914398).

Import steps[edit]

import steps Some steps have been identified to import this to Wikidata. Code has been added to Module:Bio to populate maintenance categories.

These steps are current as of April 2016.

  1. Login to Widar, PLtools
  2. Create items for articles missing them: with PetScan
  3. Complete instance of (P31). Please check the lists and process manually articles of duos.
    1. Add P31=Q5 to items without any statements: with PetScan
    2. Add P31=Q5 to items without instance of (P31): with PetScan
  4. Sesso > sex or gender (P21)

Checks[edit]

  1. Items without P31=Q5: articles can have other values in P31 than human (Q5), e.g. legendary figures, duos, etc. Duos should generally also have has part(s) (P527) linking to each person.
    • This lists some items that might need checking. A series of possible values for P31 are already excluded.
  2. Wikidata:Database reports/identical birth and death dates/1
  3. Items without P21

Summary[edit]

(May 8, 2016) The above steps allowed to import at least 30000 statements in April/May 2016. Earlier imports already covered much. By refining the steps further or importing some information manually, further statements can still be added.

As Italian Wikipedia grows by some 500+ articles per 10 days, repeating the steps weekly or monthly can help adding the corresponding data to Wikidata.
