Announce[edit]

@Jura1, GerardM, Mbch331: Hi, I created this project after the discussion Topic:Syjtwblpx3gdk1dy because I don't think we already have a project to discuss such issues. Please correct me if I'm wrong. (Pinging some people I know will be interested) author  TomT0m / talk page 12:50, 18 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

We do not have such a project. The way it works for me is that an award is an award. All the other stuff is essentially confusing the issue. An award is granted by.. It is on the person or organisation where I add award received. This is enough. I tend to add websites on the award or on the awarding organisation.
There are things that confuse. Having subclasses on award is imho only confusing. It does not help as it is easy enough to indicate what an award is about. Thanks, GerardM (talk) 14:26, 18 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There are two main problems in the mentioned topic.
  1. It is not clear of awards like an Academy Award for Best Director are an instance of an Academy Award or a subclass of an award.
  2. Currently the constraint for nominated for (P1411) state that you can only be nominated for an instance of award or an instance of a subclass of Award. So the value of the P1411 claim needs to have a P31 statement.

Completely dropping a constraint that says the value of P1411 needs to be an award is not a solution either, because you might get very strange claims, e.g. nominated for (P1411)human (Q5), which would be an absolute nonsense claim. But maybe that's the whole problem with constraints, we can't live without them (as it would give very strange "valid" claims), but sometimes it's a pain in the neck to properly write them down. For a human being it's easy to see if something is a valid claim or not in most cases, but for an automated tool this is much harder, that tool needs clear guidelines, whereas defining those clear guidelines is sometimes much harder. Awarder[edit]

Hello,

I use the tool Awarder to add a lot of recipients of prize in Wikidata. It is the right solution? You use this tool on this project or an other?

With this tool, I have a problem because when the date is a lin (e.g. [[1965]]), the tool didn't recognize it like a date. My solution is to use a spreedsheet to delete the brackets. It's a little bit lenghty. Have you an other solution?

Going through the lists at Wikidata:Database reports/items without claims categories, I frequently come across categories for awards. I tend to skip them as I don't want to add a p31 for the former to items for the later.

Notified participants of WikiProject Award : In light of a certain affair in France, what do you think about creating more Authority properties about awards, and collecting the data for MixNMatch. In the French case, we already have the Leonore database, but it's not extended to the current period. Ordre du Mérite: I don't know if such a db is public. And so on…

I guess it would require the equivalent of FOI requests in the case to public db is available.

Refused awards[edit]

Has there been any discussion about how to model awards that were declined by the recipient? For example, Grigori Perelman (Q117346) has rejected several mathematical awards. --Waldir (talk) 09:10, 2 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What are the best modelled items for your areas of interest?[edit]

Hi all

Over the past few months myself and others have been thinking about the best way to help people model subjects consistently on Wikidata and provide new contributors with a simple way to understand how to model content on different subjects. Our first solution is to provide some best practice examples of items for different subjects which we are calling Model items. E.g the item for William Shakespeare (Q692) is a good example to follow for creating items about playwright (Q214917). These model items are linked to from the item for the subject to make them easier to find and we have tried to make simple to understand instructions.

We would like subject matter experts to contribute their best examples of well modelled items. We are asking all the Wikiprojects to share with us the kinds of subjects you most commonly add information about and the best examples you have of this kind of item. We would like to have at least 5 model items for each subject to show the diversity of the subject e.g just having William Shakespeare (Q692) as a model item for playwright (Q214917), while helpful may not provide a good example for people trying to model modern poets from Asia.

You can add model items yourself by using the instructions at Wikidata:Model items. It may be helpful to have a discussion here to collate information first.

Thanks

Sprint around the Nobel Prize announcements?[edit]

With this year's Nobel Prize announcements taking place next week, it's probably a good time to start coordinating around how best to document them here. For instance, I plan to concentrate on Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (Q80061), Nobel Prize in Physics (Q38104) and Nobel Prize in Chemistry (Q44585) and improve the Scholia profiles of the new awardees as well as past ones and associated topics, institutions, works and events. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 16:43, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Some physics tips. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 09:24, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Previously, on one of the wikis there was some drama around the bio of one of the winners not being available .. oddly, the fact that the underlying work wasn't really covered in detail at Wikidata and elsewhere didn't really bother people .. Personally, I find that more of an issue, but maybe I'm just not seeing that Wikipedia has become primarily a biographical dictionary. --- Jura 05:48, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think that the initial buzz is focused very much on the people, but in the time between the announcement and the actual award ceremony, a lot of work usually goes into improving content about the fields. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 04:28, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sample resources[edit]

Here, we can collect some sample edits, batches, queries and other materials around the above suggestions. The main purpose would be to document what is / can be done this year, so that we are better prepared for next year. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 20:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Posthumous award[edit]

Dear all, how do we designate posthumous awards? The determination method (P459) gives an error message, example: Winston Churchill (Q8016), Grand cross of the Order of the White Lion. object has role (P3831) is okay? Example: Mihály Vargha (Q54805053), Silver carpentry pencil award. Thanks. Palotabarát (talk) 07:12, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a query that gives Nobel laureates where one or both of P3188 (P3188) and Nobel Laureate API ID (P8024) are missing.

The following query uses these:

  • Properties: award received (P166)  View with Reasonator View with SQID, instance of (P31)  View with Reasonator View with SQID, subclass of (P279)  View with Reasonator View with SQID, Nobel Laureate API ID (P8024)  View with Reasonator View with SQID, P3188
    SELECT DISTINCT ?recipient ?recipientLabel ?NobelID ?NobelLaureateID WHERE {

      { ?recipient wdt:P166 [wdt:P31/wdt:P279* wd:Q7191]. }
      UNION
      { ?recipient wdt:P8024 ?NobelLaureateID . }
      UNION
      { ?recipient wdt:P3188 ?NobelID . }

      FILTER(NOT EXISTS { ?recipient wdt:P3188 ?NobelID. ?recipient wdt:P8024 ?NobelLaureateID . })
      SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "[AUTO_LANGUAGE],en". }
    }

I looked into fixing some of the P3188 cases but the formatter URL does not seem to capture the variety of URL patterns in use on the Nobel site, and I did not see an easy way to find out the P8024 values either. Pointers appreciated. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 13:30, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Withdrawn award[edit]

Is there an established model for withdrawn award? Example: Richard Dawkins (Q44461)award received (P166)Humanist of the Year (Q19869310), withdrawn yesterday. Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 12:25, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Deprecation#Reason for deprecation includes the item withdrawn award (Q24629887), so I guess the statement should be deprecated. Not yet sure what the right qualifier is (end time (P582)?) – I’ll check existing statements with that reason for deprecation. Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 12:33, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Query – looks like the only example so far is end time (P582) on Yves Rispat (Q3573932). Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 12:56, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hsarrazin pointed me towards Philippe Pétain (Q5721)award received (P166)Officer of the Legion of Honour (Q10855195) (statement, permalink), which has end time (P582) and also end cause (P1534)Indignité nationale (Q3150469) (but is not currently deprecated).
Meanwhile, 1Veertje has deprecated the statement and added reason for deprecated rank (P2241)annulment (Q759734); I’ve changed that to withdrawn award (Q24629887), since that seems more precise to me, and also added end time (P582). Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 21:58, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Type of award[edit]

I've created type of award (Q107467117), which is an item intended for use in the instance of (P31) statements of the items encompassing types of awards that, unlike class of award, aren't directly the award given to an entity. Would like outside input on such items beyond adding P31=Q107467117. ミラP@Miraclepine 18:09, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Changes in approaches to model (film) award items[edit]

The current model documented at the project page views awards like Academy Award for Best Picture (Q102427) as instances, not as classes. It suggests to use instance of (P31) in order to link group of awards (e.g. Academy Awards (Q19020)) and awards (e.g. Academy Award for Best Picture (Q102427)). There seems to exist some resistance to this approach/perspective. I'm not sure how widespread this resistance is. The current model could be changed if too many people find it odd; I opened this section to have the possibility to discuss different approaches and if they should be adopted instead of the current approach.

1) Academy Award for Best Picture (Q102427)instance of (P31)Academy Awards (Q19020) vs. Academy Award for Best Picture (Q102427)part of (P361)Academy Awards (Q19020)

I regularly spot edits linking groups of awards and awards using part of (P361). I did some "clean-up" today, linking group of awards and awards via instance of (P31) in order to have an uniform approach (that conforms to the documented model here).

2) Academy Award for Best Picture (Q102427)instance of (P31)award for best film (Q96474687) vs. Academy Award for Best Picture (Q102427)subclass of (P279)award for best film (Q96474687)

Sometimes awards like Academy Award for Best Picture (Q102427) seem to be regarded as classes, not as instances of awards. It seems that this perspective was introduced with the use of class of award (Q38033430) to identify film award categories. Now instance of (P31) class of award (Q38033430) suggests that the item should actually represent a class - which was not the case with the original model - and subclass of (P279) statements were added (e.g. award for best film (Q96474687). I moved these statements from subclass of (P279) to instance of (P31).

I don't feel strong about the two approaches to point 1); either could do. I rather prefer the P31 approach for types of awards (point 2)) but if people prefer to view the Academy Award for Best Picture (Q102427) as a class of awards (e.g. with 1997 Academy Award for Best Picture, 1998 Academy Award for Best Picture, 1999 Academy Award for Best Picture, ... as instances), it's fine with me. In the end I want to put as little effort as possible into cleaning up diverging award items and newly introduced changes. - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 13:33, 27 July 2021 (UTC) @LxxDxxAxx: as somebody who introduced such changes, recently - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 14:19, 27 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

To me there is no doubt that Academy Award for Best Picture (Q102427) is a class, as the individiual, yearly awards (as represented by the the Oscar statue the winner receive during the ceremony) can be lined up. These represent the instances of this award, so the group (=class) of the yearly statues automatically forms the class (=group) Academy Award for Best Picture (Q102427). --OlafJanssen (talk) 15:53, 20 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I am currently working on adding statements for comic awards and I have a question about the best way to model the various awards and which statements I should include. I have been trying to clean up the Eisner Awards and would like to know:

Should I include 1) Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic (Q20053723)instance of (P31)Eisner Award (Q842614) and 2) Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic (Q20053723)instance of (P31)comics award (Q28869447) or just the first statement?

Also, I have seem some awards (including some of the Academy Awards and Nobel Prize awards) that have a part of statement. Should the Eisner Awards, in addition to the instance of, also include: Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic (Q20053723)part of (P361)Eisner Award (Q842614)? -  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sandrileine (talk • contribs) at 18:49, 22. Sep. 2021 (UTC).

@Sandrileine: In this case you don't need to include both, as Eisner Award (Q842614) is already a subclass of comics award (Q28869447). So Eisner Award for Best Digital Comic (Q20053723)instance of (P31)Eisner Award (Q842614) suffices.
The part of statement is not needed. There seem to exist some users that prefer to use part of (P361) in favour of instance of (P31) but they don't engage in discussions (see section above). - Valentina.Anitnelav (talk) 07:27, 28 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Many awards are given out annually and have their identity tied to the year in which they were given. For example, "the 2008 X award". From what I understand, the advised way to represent this in Wikidata is with award received (P166) with a qualifier of point in time (P585) noting only the year. The issue I run into is for awards whose yearly versions' identity aren't tied to Gregorian calendar years, but Hebrew calendar years. For example, I added a prize to Nechama Ben-Eliahu (Q108441449) in this change, but while the award was in fact given out in the year 2008, it's thought of and identified in sources as being the prize for the year 5768 AM (Q2740938) (תשס"ח), as the day its given out is every year on Jerusalem Day (Q1472650) whose date is defined by the Hebrew calendar first and foremost.

What is the advised way to encode this, given that the date type doesn't support the Hebrew calendar? Is there an appropriate qualifier whose value I can set to 5768 AM (Q2740938) in this instance that I can use to represent this? This also applies to many other prizes such as Israel Prize (Q616568), Dizengoff Prize (Q2902423), and others.

Wouldn't it be helpful to add order (Q193622) (and its subclass) to none-of constraint (Q52558054) in the property award received (P166). And maybe move the order itself to member of (P463) to avoid situations like Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga (Q151301) RVA2869 (talk) 19:40, 16 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Model for grants[edit]

I am thinking of bringing aspects of this ontology for grants into this WikiProject.

Also, I am thinking of using this WikiProject as the place for developing data about grants. Governments and foundations give out lots of grants. They often have structured data for them. It is a major standing challenge to connect grants to their outputs, which may include papers, projects, conferences, talks, software, datasets, posters, all kinds of art, and other things which produce data that we can index.

For context, the state of the art with the many billions of dollars which the United States government awards is this search bar - https://par.nsf.gov/search/award_ids:2240660 I see this as low quality as an end-user presentation, and I think any Wikidata editor could look at grants data and output from the US government and imagine lots of ways that we could showcase this content better and with less effort. I am still thinking right now about this. Bluerasberry (talk) 19:49, 24 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Shortlist and Longlist[edit]

Some awards, notably Canada's Polaris Music Prize, have two rounds of nominees. The Polaris is quite prestigious, so making it onto either the shortlist or longlist is notable, but the shortlist is distinctly moreso. At present, there's no obvious way to differentiate between shortlisted and longlisted award candidates. Is there a qualifier that could be attached to "nominated for" where this information could be identified? If not, is there an argument for creating one?
